Sadly i received a letter today from the zoo saying that they had put Sarah to sleep. She hadnt been very well for a while and had stopped eating properly, post mortem revealed that she had cancer of the spleen and lymph nodes.

They are hoping to have a new breeding pair by Easter next year.

RIP Sarah she was a magnificant animal i remeber seeing her when i was younger:(
Maybe They could have a new Sumatran Tiger in by the next week Paignton are looking to move Aryo born last year Maybe bring in a female from Auckland(At present 1.2 i think)
Regards Jordan.

Very sad news was told about this by Adrian1963
They are going to miss her so much she was such a beautifull animal and very much a great member of the breeding programme.
The zoo have already got a breeding pair lined up it was sort over the last 6 months due to her condition
They are new to the UK breeding programme (Adrian1963) and may even have a new enclosure somewhere else on site

I'm so sorry to hear this, I think everyone who saw Sarah loved her, and she was a real star at her feeding sessions.

Yes that area of the zoo is starting to look very empty and sad now, only Inca left.

Dudley won't be getting any new Tigers in until at least after Christmas now. Auckland currently keep 2:1 (parents and male offspring) The mother and son (Molek and Berani) are related to both of the males (Tenang and Aryo) at Paignton so importing one of them wouldn't be of any great advantage to Dudley or the EEP program.

In my opinion the best geneticly matched pair for Dudley would be one of the siblings (Chandra and Tibor, born Heidelburg 2007) from Edinburgh along with either Banda (Sarah X Filon, September 2002) or her son Aryo (as you mentiond) The 1:1 cubs from Dublin's 2009 litter are related to the Paignton line (the male is ex Dudley) but they could still be paired with one of Edinburgh's pair. Lisbon Zoo also have cubs from 2009 but they are a little young to be moving away yet (around 15 months old I think)

On the tiger front my friend (Adrian1963) is convinced that the new pair will be from outside the UK like the Snowleopard and they will both be very young so as to have a long breeding life.
Myself I hope they are as it will bring in new blood to the UK breeding Programme will be interesting to see which pair they end up with
(Could it be a pair of white one from local collection WMSP)

Love the thought that Dudley might have an offspring of Sarah's. However, I'm not a fan of white tigers - much prefer the traditional orange and, black so much more classy and striking

Earlier in the year I was talking to one of the Education talk staff and they said one of Sarah's offspring would be the prefered choice when something happened to Sarah.

I'd be very surprised if they took on (hybrid) white tigers - they'll almost certainly stick with Sumatrans after being involved in the EEP so long.

I adore the idea of having one of Sarah's offspring at Dudley, she was the main reason i became a member of the zoo and visit so often! :)

Would be lovely to see more than one Tiger at Dudley, especially if they bring in a mate for the new Snow Leopard aswell - the zoo could thrive from it! :D

. . . Not forgetting how well the Lions are doing together - Shame they don't have a breeding pair of Lynx

With the sad passing of Sarah will Dudley have to change their logo? The tiger logo is on everything from the website to the zoo carrier bags. I would suggest the new logo should be Itar the lion.

I wouldn't think so. The logo is a tiger - not (as far as I'm aware) this particular tiger - and I'm sure the zoo will have tigers again before too long.

It's not unprecedented - Yorkshire WP went best part of a year with a zebra logo but no zebras, and the same animal stayed as part of London's logo some time after departing (though both zoos now have zebras (again) ).

Banda at Paignton would be the obvious choice then, as Paignton have already stated that they are planning to move her on
