this has apparently been happening for a very long time now but I just found out 5 days ago.

Returning from my parents home state Sarawak, Malaysia I was shocked to learn that it is the site for over 20 megadams!
the largest being well over the size of singapore!!
An absoulute enormous amount of rainforest has been destroyed to make these dams.
the article is from 2002 but oh well
World Environment News - Malaysia names builders for controversial mega-dam - Planet Ark

animals like hornbills, tomistamas, orang-utans, proboscis monkeys, and also the Borneo subspecies of the Sumatran Rhino, will lose huge amounts of home areas.

Just thought I'd post this. :(

Dragonelenerd,

The Malaysian state of Sarawak is indeed under pressure from large scale logging and dam projects. It has been lurking under the surface for years that Dayaks, Penan and Punan peoples are losing their forest homes. No amount of litigation has yet put a stop to this practice (even though there has been a moratorium on logging in the State for 4-5 years now).

There are however large scale opposition groups, even locally organised Dayak groups, that are contesting all these illegal activities. You might wish to sign on ...???
