Zoo Schwerin Schwerin Zoo

I visited Schwerin Zoo in the northern end og Germany back in the fall of 2006 and enjoyed my visit a lot. It was a nice zoo, nothing huge or fancy, but had a good feeling to it. Since their website only is in German and I can only master that language to some degree, I have a few questions about the zoo:

1) How is the construction of the new exhibit for white rhinos going? I believe they have been raising money for that for a long time?

2) Any other buildings or projects new since 2006?

And finally a historical question:

3) In 2006 I purchased a keyring at Schwerin Zoo featuring what is clearly a coquerel's sifaka. The shop had an extensive collection of keyrings that were clearly custom made for the zoo with logo and everything and featuring animals that lived there (at least some of the pictures were clearly taken at the zoo). However, I found no sifakas at the zoo even though I looked hard. My question is if Schwerin Zoo has kept coquerel's sifakas within recent years, and if so, where?

@Toddy. No german Zoo has ever kept any species of sifakas, unfortunately. I hope, we will get them in the future.

As far as I know, the Rhino house is completed. I've seen it under construction in summer 2008, it was already complete at this time.

I have no knowledge of the future plans of Schwerin zoo, which is a really a good Zoo, I enjoyed my visit also.Let me see, what I can find out on their webside.

Not completly true. Zoo Berlin had Crowned sifaka in the period 1904 - 1905.

Also a new lion-enclosure is planned in the area of the wild-dog exhibit. In the "old" (on zoolex featured) exhibit are now striped hyenas.

That is great, something of a home-coming! It implies the lions will then be part of an extended African Savannah (given that both the rhino and giraffe exhibits will be combined and extended). I assume the later will also impinge upon a giraffe house extension and a full breeding group before not too long (again).

It also means an exhibit in the upper part is free for a new species! Any idea as to plans there!???

New species at Schwerin : a pair of Golden-headed lion tamarins came from Wuppertal. They will share their enclosure with Red-footed tortoises and Green iguanas.

Schwerin has received a new male White Rhino - male, Kimba (born Knowsley 2008) arrived from Zoo Lille, France this week

After a positive test of bird flu on a Snow goose the complete waterfowl collection which has been kept outdoors has to be killed :( !
This means the death of about 50 - 60 birds of 18 species.

Zoo Schwerin got a new male Pileated gibbon from Zoo Mulhouse, 6-year old Laos. He will be paired with the female ( Chasima ) which is already in Schwerin.

Recently Southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) male Kimba left for zoo Zürich. He arrived at Zoo Schwerin in 2016 in the hopes of mating with the two present females, sadly this didn't happen. Research later showed that he was infertile, which could either be caused by
physical or psychological reasons. Possibly a change in the group composition could have positive effects on his fertility, four female rhino's await his arrival in Zürich.
