sea gulls

he came from a rescue centre he was born and hand reared there but is to friendly to be released , the common gull chick is fine he is full sized now ,

Wow that's awesome ! I can't wait for the pictures :) GBB gulls are such majestic birds.
Don't you have any cohabitation problems with the smaller species you keep ? I read GBB were real predators and do not hesitate to kill and eat other gull species.
Hopefully you'll get a female to start a private breeding program of these magnificent birds (they're actually one of my favorites).

i hope to get pics on asap very busy at moment building new enclosure , the greater black backed are some size he/she dwarfs the herring gulls i don't generally keep mixed species of gulls together at the moment i have the greater and herring gulls with the black tailed but this is only temporary until i have finished new enclosure , i do have black headed gulls mixed with ring teal and have had no problems at all even through breeding season for ducks i have had odd duck eggs laid in the open and the black headed haven't touched them , i hope to get a mate one day for the greater and get them to breed like you say they are a magnificent bird ,

at last we finished building new aviary's just got to plant some grasses now , we had the greater black backed feather DNA done and its a male so search on for a female , hope to get pics on this weekend ,

just a few updated pics at last

the middle pic on left the 2 commons are the mum and this years chick, and 2nd one down in centre is gillie the greater black backed ,

What's the story with the Cormorants? Have the Greylag Geese replaced the Egyptians, or do you have both?

hi i was in Belgium and see them for sale they were bred in Germany and i do like them they mix with the gulls fine and are so friendly , the grey lags have replaced the Egyptian geese a friend of mine has them now as they were to aggressive to each other and the wild muscovys , its a shame as i do like the Egyptian geese but the greys are allot easier even in the breeding season ,

i would love to take them fishing like they do in Asia, i throw sprats and herring in there pond and its great watching them retrieve them ,

Just discovered ZooChat, this is a really interesting thread, I have always fancied keeping some Gulls myself, in fact I may be able to acquire some Black Headed this year.

that's great , black headed are great little birds they go mad when i clean there pond out and put a few dried meal worms on pond well funny to watch , i just purchased 5 more pair of black tailed gulls so im up to 7pr now and i do have a young pr 2011 bred available if your interested pm me , i am still searching for a greater black backed gull i have a male here and would love to get him a mate even another male to keep him company , the gulls are so interesting to keep it would be great to see others start keeping them ,

just spent a week trying to capture a herring gull that has found a home with us due to some so & so shooting it and has totally smashed its leg looks like a shotgun was used pore thing , i have now caught it and its off to the vet on Monday am to have the leg removed , it has been hanging around here for a few weeks before it got shot in the cold weather in January it was coming down for the brown bread that i put out for the geese and yes i cant help it a few sprats on top of aviary it then stopped coming for a week or so and then it turns up with its leg hanging, i no its the same bird as it looks like it has 2 bare patches on its shoulders , it must have been struggling for food thus why it came back here just shows how smart they can be , i have it in our large aviary so he can fly about with other herring gulls and is doing very well ,

Wow, this is awesome! What a nice place for the gulls! And it's great that you took in the one who was shot. :[ I love gulls, I think their calls are beautiful and so iconic to the feel of the sea. A lot of people seem to hate the herring gulls and deem them "winged rats" the same way they do with pigeons. Is it the birds' fault that they take advantage of the discarded food so readily available? Is it their fault that they are abundant? It's nice to see someone who doesn't discriminate against them. :P

thank you , the herring gull has one leg now the op went well it bled alot but is doing great and eating ok we did not think it was going to make it after the op as the 1st day it did look well rough and not happy at all , i am sure it will be fine and one day maybe even breed as it will be with us now for the long term , like you say great birds and very clever to ,

hi , he/she is doing great its got me worked out already i put sprats on one tree stump ,sea duck pellets on another and cat food on another the gull sits on far stump waiting for me to exit and dident move til it herd the slide bolt lock down but today i think it was cold as all 3 herring gulls went strait for it as i left 1st feed , it is coping very well the other 2 herring gulls are good with it , they have a large deep pond for the cormorants in there the gulls love it and the one legged gull can fly on and off fine so all is good ,

here are a few pics i took 3 days after his op , he looks loads better now
