sea gulls

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but i'm fascinated. How did last year's breeding go? Did the grey gulls breed in the end?
 
HI, that’s cool the greys had 2 eggs one was clear and the 2nd the chick died half way out , it was there 1st time so fingers crossed this year both pr are looking well good and getting very vocal , we had 3 common gull chicks, 1 black headed, nothing from black tailed , slender billed are ready to breed this year all going well , grey headed are doing ok all the right things but no eggs as yet not long i hope ,
 
Very interesting! While I have never been a huge fan of gulls I have always resented the idea that they should be "flying rats", in my mind they are no better or worse than any other bird and rather fun to watch sometimes. I saw some gulls fight a crow today for some food (the crow won in the end) and it was a magnificent show.

I had no idea anyone even kept gulls but why not? I liked reading about it and the gulls and their little adventures.
 
it is amazing how much interest they get as every one thinks of the herring gull and not all other species of gulls , they are fascinating to watch , i like all the gulls so clever and how they have adapted to modern times of man kind , we still get peggy our one legged herring gull turn up every morning for her sprats and stays here most days all day then goes of to were ever she roosts for the night its very rewarding after her story , we have another one legged herring gull Hugo he will be up for release as soon as his flite feathers grow back we hope he to will hang around with peggy ,
 
many thanks, our grey gulls eggs are hatching should be out today its been a 3 year wait but well worth it , i checked them this morning and both chicks in eggs chirping well and just about to burst out , Hugo is now starting to fly about in aviary so about 2 weeks time he can have his freedom we so hope he stays around but time will tell ,
 
we released Hugo back then but he never returned hope he is well out there, peggy still comes home every day without fail for her sprats she is great i get up to feed up my wildfowl ect at 7am ish and peggy is waiting on the fence like lord of the manor , i do wonder how many years she will stay with us she is a adult now so maybe she will find a mate one day , she goes off to roost before dark but were she goes god only knows but am she is back , she never bothers the ducks even when they have ducklings she even feeds with them on ponds after the floating pellets ,
 
we had 2 grey gull chicks, slender bill gulls laid but nothing hatched it was there 1st breeding season , commons 2 chicks, black headed had 6 , we hope to do far better this year i really hope our grey headed breed , we have moved things about a bit so fingers crossed ,

Leigh do u live in UK?? I live in Canada and u are not a loud to keep a seagull as a pet..did u have to get a permit to own a seagull?? Thanks

It's easier to get a permit to kill a gull than to own one ! Just for information how did you get your gulls ? I guess the native species are rescue, but the "exotic" species came from zoos, did you buy the gulls from them ? It's a shame they're so rare in private hands as well as in public institutions, gulls are very interesting and clever birds.

I agree...i looked up permits for gulls and it was to control them..just different ways to control them...sad ..nothing on owning one....i am in Canada...

hi sorry i haven't had time to update on gulls , are grey gulls are on eggs at moment and our slender bills looking to nest anytime now , peggy our one legged gull still comes in for her fish daily but last 2 weeks iv not seen her so im hoping she is breeding somewhere will be interesting if she re appears with young at tow , as for breeders of gulls in uk apart from one zoo im not aware of any others breeding them , there are some zoos in Holland and Germany with them
