sea gulls

iv been slowly getting the gulls friendly with dried meal worms each day they go mad for them another week and i hope to get them to take from hand , the common gulls are well noisy but as iv no neighbours its not a problem very amusing to watch always doing somthing , most of them are adult so good poss they may breed next year fingers crossed
 
just wanted to run this by you all im wanting to keep some black headed gulls i have one that came from tiddlywinks rescue centre and is doing great with common gulls now my question is harrods of London sell there eggs in spring for human consumption now would i be breaking any law in hatching some and close ringing them to keep in my private collection ? i cant see why not rather than eating the eggs any info would be great,
 
I suggest you consult DEFRA about the legal implications, and get their advice in writing.
 
i am looking into it but DEFRA im sure will be of little use i will call them and get passed around 15 times as per norm , spring time is a way off yet i sure will get it in writing from who ever, it will be interesting to here what they will say about it , i will let you no how i get on with them ,
 
i put the common gulls in there new aviary yesterday and i went in with them today and to my surprise one has started building a nest on a log and she has sat on it for most of today how bizarre im not expecting any eggs but birds do the strangest things iv put a few pictures to show you

hi its 50ft long 8ft wide and 8ft tall , just got to put some plants in sea grass ect and a few more tree stumps as they do like them to stand on ,
 
hi and thanks , i have spoke to few people about it and as long as i keep proof of purchase that they were lawfully taken by licensed person should be fine , i am going to call DEFRA about it but with them you never get same answer by 2 people ,
 
I know what you mean i once had two different views on keeping mouse lemurs from DEFRA, one person saying they weren't on the DWAL and someone saying they were on there!
 
sounds like what i had importing a bull from Belgium got there in the end after 20+ phone calls , im sure i will work out the red tape with them as there is bound to be some but i think that's part of the fun ,
 
does anyone known of anyone who keeps any type of gulls i find it amazing that no one does , they really are very interesting birds to keep , the common gulls are brilliant always active and vocal and the one black headed sure stands his/her place with them
 
Unfortunatly not... Ive only come across two people who have kept gulls in the past although no where as well as your enclosures!
One was a rescue centre and due to it having lost a wing it would free range hoping everywhere. For some reason it would sit with the goats in the straw!
The other was a bird a friend of mine kept for a few months in there BATHROOM whilst it rehabbed for release!
However if you start breeding them I'm sure plenty of bird keepers with space would start keeping them! After all there are some very unusual birds kept privatly.
 
i really hope to get the commons breeding next year the early signs are looking verry promising the black tailed will take a year or 2 to mature , i have been searching all over Europe to find black headed ect i have many people looking but no joy as yet , i get so many funny comments and looks when i say i keep gulls ? i just say why not each to there own :rolleyes:

hi thank you for your interest , i learning a fair few things about the gulls as i go along like they like green cabbage ,whiskers cat food but only the salmon one iv tried all other fishy cat food but this one they all go mad for , they like marine floating duck pellets ,sprat's and chopped herring , here is a strange one today i was chopping up some apples for the zebu and put a few slices in with the gulls and they all went mad for it and did not leave a bit considering there was plenty of other food in there to ?

hi at moment 6 species of gull I hope to build on that in the future , silver gulls , grey headed, greater black backed ,little gulls and a few more black headed , these are a few on my wish list,
