It appears PETA is planning on opening a branch in Australia sometime soon. If that's the case, then I guess those of us Down Under can expect more of the following idiocy.

I'm not a big fan of fishing, and I know that commercial fisheries - if not regulated - can damage fish stocks if overfished. But PETA has an idea to stop people from eating fish and reduce fishing activities - by renaming fish as 'sea-kittens'.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not agreeing with or promoting this ridiculous idea. But it gave me a good laugh and I thought other members of this site might like a reason to laugh at these nutters.

I'm wondering what the PETA would have us do for food.

A significantly large portion of the world's population survives on a meagre diet of fish. It is generally a healthy food source, and provided that controls are maintained to prevent over-fishing, it is a sustainable source.

A global lack of food is shaping up to be one of the great tragedies of this century - especially as oil supplies dwindle and traditional food crops begin to get used for biofuels instead which will be far more profitable than selling them as food.

Fish may be seen as somewhat of a luxury in some countries - but it is a staple necessity in many others.
 
Disgraceful - I love how seriously they take this idea though. I can't help but feel sorry for the scientists they label as 'sea kitten biologists' haha
 
A comedy show in the US recently commented on this...their response was to call kittens "land fish" and eat them instead since the word "fish" no longer makes an animal adorable.
 
I think "land fish" has already been used for capybaras. But I can see the funny side of that.

Hippo was also "fish" in East Africa, for the same reason as capybara.

And who knows why Barnacle Goose is called "barnacle"?
 
But why, of all the birds, barnacle geese were believed not to hatch from eggs but transmute from crustaceans?

OK. Quick answer: all these are related to religious ban of eating meat but not fish/seafood. Capybara could be eaten in Fridays by Adventists in Brazil; hippo could be eaten by Muslims in East Africa without being halal shaugthered, barnacle goose meat could be eaten in Europe during lent.
 
Even simpler answer: the early missionaries - often the first Europeans to actually spend any amount of time in a new country/region - are well known for being zoological ******. And when they 'name' a new species as a type of 'fish' or whatever, that religion accepts the decision as gospel.

Peta needs to just stop. It's bad to get fanatical about any cause. It just shuts the mind off from new ideas.
 
Nobody ever takes them seriously because they always go about things in the wrong way. IFAW or whatever it is acts so much more grown up and I'd be happy to support them even though it is the same cause as peta but Iwould never, ever support peta.
And I don't think Mulesing is as outrageous as they make out because without it all the sheep in Australia would be getting eaten alive by maggots. Lets go drop some bloody, stinking and almost dead flyblown sheep on their doorstep and see how they like it.

Oh dear - what has happened to the Aussie sense of humour???

Hix starts a thread with the intent of us having a bit of a laugh at some idealogical nutters and so many posts have been censored deemed to be "inappropriate". Now there's an oft misused word!

I didn't see the posts by ZooYouthBen, ZooPro and Jurek so I don't know whether they were funny or not.

But I have also been censored, without a "please explain" from the moderator, for a simple couple of sentences on the subject.

Why?

If PETA's apologists have taken over this forum then why not delete the whole darn thread.

Please feel free to blame me for commenting about the somewhat racist posts that had been made on this thread. I personally took offence to them, and no doubt, some of the other forum members did also.

The moderator obviously agreed with me and decided to remove them.

I like to think I have a great sense of humour, although clearly, it must not be an "Aussie" sense of humour, but I don't find racist comments particularly humourous.
 
Yes, sorry Steve, but Aussie humour is not globally recognised or appreciated - and is very easily misconstrued.

As a very proud Aussie that saddens me to hear. I would very much like our humour to be "out there" so that other nationalities can come to grips with it.

However, this is your forum Sim and I have no argument with you running it in the way that you choose.

I'm not "blaming" anyone ZooPro - just lamenting the perceived need to shield the rest of the world from something that is quintessentially Australian ...... our robust and irreverent sense of humour.

I have not seen the previous posts that were deleted so I can't comment on them. I certainly don't think that my couple of lines were "racist". Do you?

If so, I hope that I didn't offend you some time ago by my reference to the "Pommies on bicycles admitted free" signs that used to be displayed at the entrance to the Warragamba Lion Park.

Those signs were also at the Beenleigh Lion park in Qld as well Steve, I saw them there in 1973 :eek:
 
I'd say that good humour is recognised and appretiated globally-no matter where it's from. Yet to judge the quality of the joke, I'd have to read it first...
And I personally do enjoy Aussie humour!
 
Please indulge me: What does the word "pommies" mean? I guess it is some kind of Aussie slang?
 
I'm not sure of the origin of the term "Pommie", but it is used by Australian's to refer to the British (or more specifically to the English I believe).

Just like we'd call a New Zealander a "Kiwi", an American a "Yank", ourselves an "Aussie" etc.

They're not generally intended to be derogatory terms - just slang.

However, you will also hear Australian's use the term "whinging pom" which usually refers to the way the English complain a lot ... usually about the weather (and why so many of them come to Australia for the same reason) :D

A note on the Kiwi's - the fourth largest New Zealand city is the suburb of Bondi in Sydney ... apparently there are more Kiwi's living there than in Hamilton (NZ's 3rd largest city).
