Sea Kittens?

I have not seen the previous posts that were deleted so I can't comment on them. I certainly don't think that my couple of lines were "racist". Do you?

I have no real interest in continuing to expand this thread Steve, but in answer to your question, maybe I misunderstood you - what did your reference to Sussex Street refer to in terms of this thread?

Please indulge me: What does the word "pommies" mean? I guess it is some kind of Aussie slang?

Dan - there are two main theories as to how the word "Pommy" came to be used for the English.

Firstly, as most early English arrivals in this country were convicts transported to this [then] colony to serve their time, the thought is that the word was derived from the initials of Prisoner Of Mother England.

Secondly, because of the risk of the condition scurvy on the long voyage from England, prisoners were fed diets including fruit such as pomegranite - the name of which was corrupted to "pommy". This theory has some legs to stand on given the fact that the Yanks refer to the English as "limeys" for the same reason - they were fed limes on the voyage to help combat scurvy.

I don't know which, if any, of these two theories is correct as, despite what my grandchildren might tell you, I wasn't there at the time!

Likewise ZooPro - after consultation with Sim I think we'll just leave it there and let those who didn't see it just use their imaginations!!
