Auckland Zoo Sea Lion Shores

I visited Auckland Zoo on Sunday, it was great to see the two sea lions Scuttles and Kipper swimming with the fur seals Kaiako, Moana and Orua. Auckland Zoo has done very well to successfully intergrate these animals.

Scuttles and Kipper were born during the 1990s and their species will be phased out as Auckland Zoo moves towards housing the New Zealand native species.

yes it is a great little group, they all get along well and the larger scuttles and kipper dont pick on the smaller ones. the feeding routine is perfected

Do you know how long it took to introduce them? It's increadible that they all get on so well, you'd think they would be territorial and fight (especially with three males).

sea lions and fur seals will live together all the time - they are not difficult to house together (generally speaking). Especially Californian Sea Lions and NZ Fur Seals. In Fact CSL's are probably one of the most skittish/shy around other species...

I never knew that, although Marineland housed a California Sea Lion in with a NZ Fur seal I think, they were called Makea and Bart and seemed to get on well.
