Seaburn

Gosh that was a surprise. I never knew that Robyn ever tried her hand at dolphins.

Can't remember off-hand who wanted more info about Seaburn, but if you know who you are... I had a look in my diaries and two of our dolphins at Flamingo Park went there.. Handsome, (pictured below with a colleague of mine), in 1974, the other one, Bubbles, went there in May 1975.

What was she doing when you knew her, Peter? She was at Flamingo with me in '75 (she must have been there late '74 also) with the Dolphins and left to go to Dudley Zoo in August of that year. She was married to John Varley. Wonder what she's doing now.

Robin Haig was David Taylor's old PA if memory serves me correct. She was living with Francis Randell when I first met her at Coventry Zoo and Francis and Robin went to Seaburn - I went up to stay with them for a weekend at the time in 1973. I heard they split up then got back together again. The last I heard of Francis her was curator of a military museum after he left Windsor Safari Park.

I remember Robyn first coming to Flamingo in, I think 1969. She arrived with Peter Muller and both, if I remember correctly had been employed by Slimbridge prior to that. Peter later went to Frankfurt to work. I saw him there in about 70 or 71. Robyn worked initially as a bird keeper but later as David Taylors sidekick.

I think the last time I saw Robyn she was working at Lambton Safari Park in about 73. Along the way...before or after she worked at the Welsh Mountain Zoo.

Last thing I heard was she was running a pub up in Northumberland.

Yes Francis was in a Museum over towards Liverpool somewhere. I thought it had a more naval theme but I could be wrong.

Best Wishes,

Peter

Bless you both! Thank you so much for the extra information, I really appreciate it. :) As I said, I only knew Robyn when she worked with me during 1975, as she left for Dudley with husband John Varley later that same year. I didn't realise she'd actually been at the Zoo way before I arrived on the scene. I'm not sure where they lived while she worked with us though. They had a large dog.. afghan I think, (or some long-haired breed like it!).

There are a couple of possibilities. It could be she went and worked at one of the other collections under the Associated Pleasure Parks umbrella (followed by Scotia Investments and then, what was it? Trident Television?) or she could have left the group altogether only to return later. Some did, sometimes twice.

So who opened and operated the Dolphinarium at Seaburn? Was it another Associated Pleasure Parks enterprise?

I know that after the dolphinarium closed the site was occupied by Martin lacey who installed a zoo there after boarding over the old dolphin pool. His zoo existed there 1977/78. It was during 1978 that a young keeper/volunteer got mauled by a tiger there.
