Twycross Zoo Sealions

Hey,
Just a quick one. Been twycross today and only saw the male in the Sea lion enclosure. Anyone know where the female has gone. Dont tell me shes gone. They cant have one sea lion. They used to have four a few years back!
 
It was about 5 o clock and the male was on the island. We were there for 5 minutes seeing if it was there and it never came up for air if it was in there. Maybe it could have been in the cave bit? I shoulve checked in the pool behind, near the bird walkway, you know which is slat fenced off with the singnage on (tapirs)
 
Talking of the sealion pool, does anyone else here think its well over due a replacement. Something a bit more natural and modern would be great. Thoughts anyone?
 
Couldn't agree more lemur guy. The land part is very limited and their looks like a lack of naturalistic features and enrichment.
 
Went again yesterday and it wasnt there again. does anyone know where the missing sealion has gone???? Surely they cant jst have the one male now.

If it has left the collection/died they will have to keep the male in his own either till he leaves or they can find another female,which in the case of Patagonian Sealions will be easier said than done as they are not that common in the U.K and Europe!

Aren't Colchester sitting with 0.5 females in their state of the art enclosure?
 
As I posted in my update thread, there are indeed definitely still 1.1 Patagonian Sealions at Twycross. Photographic evidence attached! :)

(I did try to get them to pose with today's newspaper but they wouldn't have it!)

Did you time them to see how long they can stay under the water because I believe they can stay under for over 15 minutes which is one hell of alot longer than the 3-5 minutes that the average Human can.:p
Next time can I suggest you get them to pose at feeding time with the paper as they would probably do it for a couple of fish.:D
 
When was the last Patagonian Sealion pup born at Twycross? OR anywhere in the UK for that matter. I know Banham and Cricket St. Thomas used to keep this species, and there was talk of Edinburgh acquiring some (ISIS now shows 1.2) but aside from Twycross there is only a single-sex group at Colchester (and has been the case since the current exhibit opened), and the single animal at the Gweek Seal Sanctuary (since the large male died of old age), Dudley are the only other collection I can think of that keep them.
 
There are two young animals at Gweek that arrived this year for the newly remodelled Sealion pool (unless something catastrophic has happened in the last few months). Not sure of sexes off the top of my head.
 
The ones at Gweek are 2 young Males.The large male that died at Gweek recently was actually a Californian Sealion and not a Patagonian.
 
I don't mean that animal, I mean the male patagonian that died a couple of years ago.

Was the californian sealion that died Rocky?

Oh you where on about the One that arrived with the female Patagonian that left the collection earlier this year.Yes Rocky was the Californian Sealion.

Wasn't the first British collection to breed the Patagonian sea lion, Curraghs wildlife park on the Isle of Man, or was that South American fur seal?
 
Right so is their a female at Twycross or has it left for another collection, or died? There seems to be conflicting views. Was that photograph taken after I said I hadnt seen it?
