It is with a heavy heart that we bring you the news that the SeaQuarium will be permanently closing its doors as of 4pm on Monday November 27, 2023.
This decision comes as a result of the ongoing Coastal Sea Defence work on Rhyl Promenade. The noise, disruptions and vibrations from coastal defence works has and will continue to impact the welfare of our animals to the point where we believe it is in the interest of their welfare if we rehome them. While we are saddened by this closure, unfortunately we have no other options. We are fully committed to ensuring the well-being of our beloved seals and marine animals. It is of the utmost importance to us as we now go about finding them new homes.
We are pleased to inform you that some of our incredible animals have already been offered new homes within other aquariums and zoos throughout the UK and we are continuing to search for the best facilities for all of our animals. This transition will be carefully coordinated to minimise the disruption to their lives, and we have every confidence that they will thrive in their new environments.
During this challenging time, our dedicated staff members are being supported through this transition and we understand that this closure brings uncertainty and change, but we are committed to assisting our team through the process of redundancies. Their dedication and passion for the SeaQuarium has been invaluable, and we extend our gratitude for their tireless efforts over the past 30 years.
We would like to express our deepest appreciation to the local community and beyond for the unwavering support you have shown us throughout our years of operation. It is because of your enthusiasm, loyalty, and love for marine life that the SeaQuarium has thrived for over three decades. We are incredibly humbled and grateful for the memories we have shared, the educational experiences we have provided, and the connections we have fostered.
While the SeaQuarium may be closing its doors, our commitment to marine conservation and education remains resolute. We urge you to continue supporting your local aquariums, ecological charities, marine research organisations, and environmental initiatives.
Together, we can make a difference in protecting our oceans and preserving the wonders of marine life for future generations.
Once again, we extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for being a part of the SeaQuarium's journey. The memories will forever echo in our hearts, and we hope that you will carry them with you as we embark on new adventures.
With the warmest regards,
The SeaQuarium Team

There are some news reports in the local press.

Rhyl SeaQuarium confirms closure ‘with a heavy heart’ | Rhyl Journal

have never visited, but it seems to have been popular and it’s a shame when a collection closes. Quite a huge decision to make.

It's quite popular in the season for holiday makers, used to sell lots of tickets when I used to work on the holiday park. I haven't been for years so don't know what species they hold.

Looks like they've 4 African fur seals unsure if they've sealions as well

4 fur seals and 2 Harbour seals is what they have and I'm sad that it's going because it is literally walking distance from me

Ahh no way, you're only up the road from me 20 min drive. It is sad news but I guess if it's putting animals at risk because of the disruption then their welfare comes first. Interesting to know where they will move to

Very strange, when I first saw the news, it was on their social media and the statement was quoted from their page, now it is no longer on their page.

Were I to guess, assuming the information you quoted was accurate, they've decided to postpone the announcement until after they have closed down at 4pm to stop people in the local area from all rushing there for a final visit ;)

I haven't mentioned this on the forum before but I might as well mention it now. I did my work experience for university here and it was the first zoological collection I worked at. Really sad news for me personally :(

Hoping for the best for all the staff and animals, trust they have and will continue to make the best decisions.

To answer the previous questions regarding pinnipeds, yes they have 2 harbour seals and 4 South African fur seals, all females.
