SeaWorld San Diego SeaWorld San Diego News

Can anyone provide a recent on display species list?
Mainly interested in penguins and pinniped but a more complete list would be welcomed

San Diego has king, emperor, adelie, chinstrap, gentoo, macaroni, southern rockhopper, and Magellanic on display, as well as Humboldt off display.

for pinnipeds, they consistently have California sea lion, pacific walrus, pacific harbour seal, and Guadalupe fur seal on display. There is also a chance to see ringed, and possibly harp seal as well, in the arctic complex.

Nakai, a 20 year old male killer whale, died Thursday night at SeaWorld San Diego. According to an official statement made by SeaWorld on Friday, Nakai had been suffering from a treatment resistant infection. Rest in peace, Nakai!

Read the full Facebook statement here: SeaWorld’s Statement

Can confirm Nakai did die from a lung infection as I previously stated.

Interestingly, the previous three adult orca deaths at Seaworld (Tilly, Kastaka and Kayla) all died from lung infections too. That, and pneumonia seems to be a common killer of orcas in captivity.

It’s hardly interesting or coincidental. It’s well known that respiratory related issues (primarily pneumonia) are the number one killer of cetaceans under human care. It’s also no coincidence that the species and eco type that does the best overall (Atlantic inshore bottlenose) also happen to be a species and population that naturally inhabits areas close to land.

Anecdotally, the more pelagic a species is, the more prone it is to respiratory issues under human care. Although in most other aspects orcas are one of the best adapted cetaceans to living under human care, they are fundamentally still a pelagic species barring a few sub populations.

The Ringed and Harp Seal are one and the same animals and it's a Ringed Seal. Unless they got an actual Harp more recently?

I know they had a harp…3ish? years ago or so. I have no clue when they got it, if they still do, or if they don’t, what happened to it, but they did at least have one in the recent past for a period of time.

I know Orlando had or still has a harp but I’ve never heard of a harp at San Diego with the ringed and harbor seals. Also the Arctic seals should all be off exhibit and replaced with the northern sea otters so we wouldn’t know at all unless SeaWorld themselves announced it.

I believe they had a Harp quite some time ago that went to SW Orlando. When I visited in 2018 at least they only had Ringed. It's entirely possible though.

In 2018 the Ringed was on-exhibit with the Beluga.

I’m aware of the harp in Orlando, his name is Wiley and he has been there for quite a while.

The harp at San Diego was a different animal, like I said I know very little about it, other than it was there approximately three years ago, and it’s not the one that’s currently at Orlando.

that’s the issue with these darn ice seals, the facilities that have them never really talk about them much, and they also will periodically move around with absolutely no fanfare whatsoever, so it’s a mystery, lol.

Orlando's harp seal died on September 29th, 2021. There has never been a harp seal at San Diego unless in recent months, or prior to NIMM data collection.

For pinnipeds @PSO , a highlight at SWSD is a Guadalupe fur seal pup born at the park this year! They also have a 26-year-old male ringed seal which others have mentioned :)

@csartie thanks and highly appreciated

If they have ringed seal, it would be in the main pinniped exhibit?

A complete list would be more useful

Howeve, Confirmed on exhibit?
Guadalupe furs
Emporers
Chinstrap
Adiele

I can confirm Emperor, Chinstrap, and Adelie penguins. They were all on exhibit on September 4th of this year when I was there.

I didn't see any of the Guadalupe Fur seals though. Might have been off exhibit when I was by their Rocky Point exhibit.

I missed them on my visit a couple years ago too, despite checking a couple times. Seems like some people see them and others don't, do they rotate with California Sealions?

I thought they were in the polar bear exhibit after the bears left until the northern sea otters came a year or two ago?

Usually Annie is in the left exhibit but all the animals get a choice between the indoor and outdoor exhibits. Left exhibit (used to atleast) holds the calmer animals whereas the right pool holds the bigger energetic animals.
