SeaWorld San Diego SeaWorld San Diego News

The AZA does not have anything to do with the Canadian bears. Because they cannot be shipped south the 20 bears in Canada (all breeding age or younger) are not considered in the SSP. Sucks for the US population because lots of cubs will be available in the coming years but they will ultimately all go to Europe or Japan.

Szenja the polar bear unexpectedly dies at 21

SeaWorld mourns the loss of Szenja the polar bear

Not sure how it didn't get posted here, but this was April 18.

This makes SeaWorld SD the third institution this year to lose their last polar bear, after San Francisco Zoo and Hogle Zoo in Utah. Additionally, the Columbus Zoo lost Nanuq, one of only two breeding males in the country.

It was posted under Pittsburgh Zoo instead. It was sort of off topic there, but may been under there since her former companion, Snowflake, is there now.

Are there any polar bears left in the western U.S. now besides the San Diego Zoo? SF Zoo and Sea World were the last places in California to have them other than the San Diego Zoo. Do Oregon Zoo and Point Defiance still have polar bears?

Yes, both of those zoos and others in the West still have polar bears:

San Diego Zoo: 1.2
Oregon Zoo (Portland): 0.1
Point Defiance Zoo (Tacoma): 2.0
Rio Grande Zoo (Albuquerque): 2.0
Denver Zoo: 1.1
Alaska Zoo (Anchorage): 1.1

I tried finding it in the west quarantine pools but it was moved to the east side an hour before I was there. :(

Is there a 2018 news thread I'm missing?

If anyone visits the park this year please make a note of how many seals are in the Wild Arctic exhibit and if possible photograph them. It's possible more than one species is kept unsigned in this enclosure.

After several years of declining attendance (in the wake of Blackfish), the park had an attendance increase of over twenty percent in 2018. ZooChatters will be dismayed that the report indicates the increase in all SeaWorld parks is due to a shift of emphasis from animal exhibits to thrill rides.
What 'Blackfish' effect? SeaWorld San Diego attendance soared 22 percent last year
Seaeorld has generally been focusing on shifting away from shows, not necessarily the animal exhibits.

I'd say SeaWorld San Diego had surprisingly few animal exhibits than I was expecting when I visited last year, and one they had had was now-closed due to the development of a new ride.
