Twelve Caribbean Flamingo chicks have hatched at SeaWorld San Diego in the past three weeks! The chicks are being hand-raised by aviculturists in SeaWorld’s Avian Center.

Flamingos lay a single egg on a muddy mound, and both parents care for the chick for up to six years, when the young reach maturity. Though adult Flamingos are pink, the chicks have downy white feathers. The birds’ pink coloration comes from pigments in the aquatic organisms that they eat.
Caribbean Flamingos are also known as American Flamingos. They are native to some Caribbean Islands, coastal Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia, as well as the Galapagos Islands.

Orkid was the first orca successfully born at the park, and the second captive born orca to survive for more than a few weeks.
She is now 25 years old, and in roughly a month will officially be the oldest captive born orca ever.(Sadly the first captive born orca to survive, Kalina, died in 2010 at the age of 25)

Two rumors about seaworld
(11/19/13) SeaWorld San Diego has announced that they believe that their 18-year old polar bear Szenja (pronounced SIN-jah) is pregnant. How do they know she is pregnant? Ask Elvis. Yes… Elvis, a trained beagle who is able to sniff at “fecal samples” from polar bears from around North America and has indicated that Szenja is pregnant.
Rumor 2 which supposedly is on hold for the time being.
While SeaWorld San Diego is busy building the park’s new main gate / entry area for 2014, I’ve heard about a possible new plan in place for 2015. From what I’m told nothing has been finalized yet, but it seems the park was already looking into remodeling their own Penguin Encounter attraction into their own version of Orlando’s Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin attraction.
However, due to the less than satisfactory guests response to the ride portion of the Orlando attraction, the San Diego version may opt to cut out that part of the plan. Instead they would remodel the overall area around the existing Penguin Encounter attraction and put extra money into making the walk-through animal habitat portion even bigger and better than the Orlando version. Much like in Orlando, they would build the new Penguin attraction on the frame of the existing habitat. If approved, we could see this happen as early as 2015 or 2016.

Hey Fans, keep your fingers crossed, but we are hopeful that Szenja, our beautiful 18-year-old polar bear at Wild Arctic, is pregnant. She is showing strong signs of maternity - significant weight gain, creating a nest in her den and is becoming more finicky about the food she’ll eat. And most interestingly, a dog named Elvis thinks she’s pregnant (yes, you heard that right). Elvis has been trained to tell if a polar bear is pregnant simply by sniffing fecal samples (you heard that right too!!)! Our keepers have started an around-the-clock watch on Szenja, who made a breeding visit to the Pittsburgh Zoo earlier this year.
For those wondering, seaworld has three bears at the san diego site, 2 females and a male.

Yup, the last capensis was "Cooper", who was also the father of the hybrid. He died in 1996.
However, there were two short beaked common's (D.delphis) that lived at San Diego as well. A male from '96-'07, and a female from '00-'02. Shame the female didn't live longer and that they didn't produce any offspring.
They also has a male D.delphis in for several months this year, however it was released a few weeks ago.

Do you know the number of Storms storks FWC ?
They had a pair of them on display, and after going through the large majority of the park both on and off exhibit it was the only pair I saw.
They did however, have a large set of aviaries behind the penguin building that I was un-able to look into, and they could have had all sorts of goodies in there.
