SeaWorld San Diego SeaWorld San Diego News

If I remember correctly there was once a Long Finned Pilot Whale at a facility on Cape Cod who was then transferred to Miami but clearly it is no longer there. It lived with Lolita and one of her Lag buddies, they were very pleased to meet each other.

Maybe they are planning to build it after their impending lawsuit against the CCC is over?

That seems like it's the goal. If the breeding ban is lifted I'm sure we'll see a revised version of Blue World, and it looks like the new area is something to occupy our time until then. As for San Antonio and Orlando,I'm wondering if they're waiting till after San Diego's Blue World is done(if it gets done) to start construction there.

San Antonio is already busy with their dolphin thing, which was desperatley needed. There isn't underwater viewing for much right now- belugas, white sided dolphins, and orcas can only be seen in shows. This is a step in the right direction for them. Hopefully an orca habitat will follow.

Yes,but the Discovery Point project is already complete and is being used for the dolphin interaction program,it's just not yet open to the public. This means planning for a new project (possibly Blue World, possibly not) is probably already starting or will start very soon.

All of the bottlenose dolphins that the park has are at their (normally) behind the scenes area. They have hardly been introduced to a rock wall. But I do agree it is nearing completion and planning for somethings else has probably started. :)

Does anyone have any information regarding this "pending" lawsuit? I know Sea World has said that it would sue, but I'm not aware of any lawsuit actually having been filed. Not to be too cynical, but it wouldn't surprise me if Sea World were to threaten a lawsuit but not litigate the issue too vigorously (Sea World's in the position now to blame the anti-cap crowd for killing its attempts to improve the whales' exhibitry, and given the already-announced upcoming changes to the orca shows, a huge improvement for the whales' exhibit might not be such a high priority, as much as it might be needed). While many may know that I'm not a huge fan of orca programs in captivity, I do believe Sea World should do whatever it can to improve the lives of the orcas and I did laud them for attempting the Blue World project (even if its announcement couldn't help but seem reactionary).

Thanks for posting this - I somehow managed to miss it. I will be interested to see how this issue is resolved. It seems as though the issue will be one of statutory interpretation, and I'm not at all familiar with the California laws at issue, but as a lawyer, my curiosity is piqued. If I can find some time in the weeks to come, I may try to dig up some information about the legal background for the case.

I'd heard this story when it first came out,and I'm honestly rather split. On one hand,it seems to be in poor taste to sink to PeTA's level,as such stunts have been pulled by them in the past. On the other hand,it also makes sense to have someone on the other side. PeTA is both a direct and belligerent threat to SeaWorld and zoos in general. PeTA members have been arrested for assault and arson in the past, and at one point animal rights activists did actually hurl rocks at SeaWorld rescuers.

I think you might be exaggerating things a bit when you call PETA a direct and belligerent threat to Sea World and zoos. Some PETA members may have been arrested (though enough to qualify as a direct and belligerent threat?) but, as always with such groups, it can be difficult to separate the actions of a few members from activities sanctioned or organized by PETA itself.

Moreover, at least one Sea World infiltrator used social media in attempt to incite the kind of hyperbolized group-think that can lead to some threatening actions: he urged other protesters to “burn it [SeaWorld] to the ground," to “get a little aggressive” and “drain the new tanks at #SeaWorld”. The real problem for Sea World is the public relations debacle - it only heightens the credibility problem for them.

Bubbles was the oldest cetacean in human care last I checked, and most estimates put her in her early-mid 50s. What a tragedy.
