The Sedgwick County Zoo is embarking on its next major renovation — this one for the leopards.

Site work has already started on a $3.4 million project will transform the former brow-antlered deer exhibit and what was most recently a walk-through Asian forest into an expansive habitat that will house Amur leopards and, for the first time at the zoo, snow leopards.

It's expected to open mid-July 2021.

While construction continues on the leopard exhibit (opening July), the zoo has mentioned details on the further phases of their 25 year plan. Projects include:

African lodge hotel and waterpark: utilize undeveloped land behind the Zoo to build a destination resort with dramatic views of a new African Savanna.

Community events center: build a state-of-the-art venue for weddings, meetings, and community events complete with an aquatic viewing feature and an onsite catering facility.

Stingray touch experience: enable guests to watch, touch, and feed stingrays in an environment full of ocean conservation messaging and education opportunities.

Aquarium: expand existing Amphibians & Reptiles building to include large oceanic species.

Animal carousel: provide a fun and engaging way to highlight the endangered species that we care for in the Zoo and in the wild.

New concert stage and central plaza area: build an outdoor concert and event venue with the potential for multimedia experiences, animal demonstrations, and overnight campouts.

Orangutan O-Line: increase the space available to orangutans and put them closer to guests than ever before.

Aerial sky rides: provide an alternate mode of transportation as well as a new perspective of the Zoo.

I like to see the addition of Pygmy Hippo and Baboon on that plan, and the Armenian Mouflon is interesting to see... not sure why they need multiple lion exhibits, though.

That, along with a lack of representation in the way of Tropical Asia, the subtraction of river hippos from this plan despite their having a decent exhibit, and the inclusion of so many domestic animals in the Asian section rather than more endangered species, among other gripes... as a certain man wielding an orange polo would say, "haiyaa..."
 
Two Southern Cassowaries hatched at the Sedgwick County Zoo last month. From their social media:

"We’re excited to announce that last month, two healthy cassowary chicks were hatched here at SCZ! Huge shout out to our ASA Bird Keepers for all their hard work as they continue to hand-rear these beautiful chicks behind the scenes. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of these two."

The zoo announced on social media today that 5 year old female Amur tiger Callisto arrived from the Minnesota Zoo in December and is on exhibit exploring her new home.
