Orphaned bear cubs at Sedgwick County Zoo named, take first steps in new habitat

“Meet Takelma (male) and Sama (female)! Takelma was named after the Native American people who lived in the region of Oregon where they were found. Sama translates to “summer” in the native Takelma language, which is fitting for the time of year she was rescued,” the Sedgwick County Zoo explained.

On July 9th, it was announced that the zoo acquired (1.1.1) Guam kingfishers named Mames, Långet, and Sindålu from the National Aviary in Pennsylvania and the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio respectively which are at the facility's Biosecurity Translocation building.

On August 11th, the zoo announced they acquired a (1.0) maned wolf named Chrys from the Endangered Wolf Center in Missouri which is now on exhibit.

Elephant expansion planned:

'Our Growing Herd': Sedgwick County Zoo launches campaign for elephant habitat expansion

"This ambitious initiative aims to expand the existing Elephant Boma within the Reed Family Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley Habitat," the zoo said in a release on Wednesday.

The initial timeline for the campaign involves community fundraising engagement through next year and a ground-breaking in the fall of 2025. Completion of the project is anticipated for the fall of 2026

On August 30th, the zoo announced that they, along with other US facilities, bred 9 Guam kingfishers which were then transferred to Palmyra Atoll. They were then released into the wild a few weeks later.

On August 28th, the zoo announced they closed the Cessna Penguin Cove exhibit for renovations, which reopened on November 9th.

On November 13th, it was reported that the zoo will be receiving $2.5 million from the Sedgwick County Board in the future.
