I'm curious about the design to take a boat to view the elephants. The drawing makes it look like you're sharing a river with an elephant. I wonder how the barriers would work.

Could be as simply as what's designed to look like a small river bank in the middle of the river but has no way for the elephants to climb on top of it.

How often are you ever going to encounter a elephant in the water ? In the three years that Elephant Crossing has been open I've seen an elephant in the water once and I visit the zoo year round 2-3 times a week. Also 11.5 mil seems low for a elephant exhibit.

The plan view in the article shows it pretty clearly: the elephant land area slopes gradually into a pond, with a cable barrier just under the water surface invisibly separating the boats from the elephants. Quite simple but should be effective if implemented correctly.

We (Tucson) did a major elephant exhibit for 9 million and I have seen the elephants in the water many times. Not just when it is hot, either. Last winter we had a rare snowstorm and they went in the pool while it was snowing!

Both in Nashville and Dallas the Africans are quite fond of the pools. Sometimes it requires training, but usually they just take to it.

A similar approach has been used at the elephant exhibit (at the Elephant House) at the Bronx Zoo for decades... allowing visitors to stand "at the waters edge" as elephants go into the pool

Story on morning news in Melbourne Australia.

"Gorilla breaks glass in exhibit"

Apparently a Silverback named Bille has used his fists against the glass and it shattered!

This happened a few days ago. The Zoo replied to someone inquiring about it on Facebook.

"From what we've heard, we aren't exactly who the culprit is or how he did it. There is speculation that either a fist or a rock was used. This is the second time that this has happened since the building was opened. Just goes to show how strong gorillas really are!"
