Sedgwick County Zoo sedgwick county zoo

Another pachyderm hit. I am glad the elephants look like staying on and even expanding into a herd situation!

Any news on their rhinos?:D

That's brilliant news!

I know plans always change but I hope they stay close to the original plan I saw a few years ago, it looked very good and the demolition of the old building will remove the worst area from the zoo!

Unfortunately the barn which was originally going to be positioned farther away from the exhibit- encouraging exercise to reach the exhibit- has been scrapped due to costs. Meaning, with the current plan the new barn will encroach on what was initially intended to be exhibit space.

And the existing "pachyderm" building will remain in place, sans elephants

Wow that is hugely disappointing, I was originally very surprised at the cost of demolition and removal of waste, it can be huge!

Thank you L, I hope they manage to still make a great exhibit!

Visited today with my son's Kindergarten class and noticed the zoo is in the midst of installing a large solar array next to their amphibian and reptile building. A curator told me that it will supply about 50% of the power demand for the building. He also pointed out that it will be interpreted to guests about how ectotherms use the suns energy to give them power just like the solar array will give power to their building. Very simple but profound message I think!

The project was part of a project funded by Westar as described in the link below.

How many elephants do they currently have?

1, a female named Stephanie.
With the zoo's new exhibit well underway and starting to take form i'm sure they've begun exploring their options of what elephants are available to bring in.

A bull of course would be nice to see and I would almost bet money that the elephants at the nearby Lee Richardson Zoo (Missy and Kimba) will be transferred here due to the phasing out of their program.

The link below shows some photos of the work thats been done on the exhibit.

Thank you for posting the update.

Opening of this exhibit i think will finally place this zoo in the ranking it deserves.
