Sedgwick County Zoo sedgwick county zoo

Looking forward to visiting this zoo when exhibit completed, I wonder if the city is aware of the real potential to make this zoo a serious tourist destination?
A on site hotel with African savannah views?

Hi Drew,
Your mail box is full :(

Was at the zoo this morning, and I think I know the answer posed in the below article!

Neighbors mostly say good riddance to egrets, herons (PHOTOS) | The Wichita Eagle The Wichita Eagle

These are thousands of egrets that have descended on the zoo and while this could be really cool to see in the wild if has completely changed the visitor experience in a small portion of the zoo. For those of you familiar with the zoo, they are roosting over the southern end of the Australian walk through aviary, hunting dog exhibit, grevy's zebra, and the bontebok exhibit. There are several exhibits closed here, but I am not sure if it is due to these noisy guests or if work is being done on the exhibit. The whole area is carpeted with feathers, broken eggs, and droppings. Obviously being an organization focused on animal welfare if hard to just get rid of them but if they don't I would be afraid of major degradation of the landscaping in this area of the zoo. Also the amount of droppings can't be that great for the animals within the exhibit. What to do?

Hi Drew,
Wondering how the zoo is dealing with the egrets?

Hi Drew,
Wondering how the zoo is dealing with the egrets?

I have heard they are power washing the public path daily and that there is a plan to cut down many trees to try and get them to move. It would be really too bad is that is the case as there were many mature trees giving a tremendous amount of shade in that area.

Now what is the point of being a zoo if you can't deploy the tree snakes when you need to? :D

I like the way you think Rob :D Now that would be an interesting experience.

I guess the fledglings are constantly falling out of their nests and dying on impact, really a disturbing experience all the way around right now.

That is a real shame re the mature trees, they are such an asset and not easy to replace in the short term. Unfortunately for Barcelona Zoo the best thing about it was not the animals or enclosures but the significant amount of very mature elm trees providing shade to both the public paths and enclosures. Shame they can't try ZPM idea ;)

Looks decent. That covered pavillion across the brige eats up a lot of area. Designers/Zoos don't care. Pack as many visitors in as possible. Animals don't need that much space. It will be interesting to see if this exhibit will bring in more revenue and visitation to make up for budget woes as the funding was cut again. I wonder what the operational costs of this exhibit and boat rides will cost? Will they be in the black?

I think you will find that this addition to the zoo and hopefully the demolition of the existing elephant building? will place this zoo in a very strong position to become a serious tourist destination.

The original building and yard will be repurposed from what I gather. More space for Rhino, is what I heard. It's a great Zoo with a great collection. New Elephant exhibit and expanded herd are steps in the right direction. Hopefully, this drives more visitation and the new concession area bring in more money. If the boat ride is an additional cost it will add more profit and a unique experience unlike other US Zoos

You got me thinking, I think you are right except for Brevard Zoo canoe experience, the USA does not have a river/boat ride.

I hope they do charge extra and make a solid return!

I hope they do charge extra, as well. Even with cable barriers in place, being on the boat and feeling the waves created by the elephants or even getting sprayed, is worth the cost alone. It will offer closer views if the elephants are towards the back of the larger yard, as the foot paths don't access that side. I would imagine being on the boat and seeing them rush into the pool to be an exciting photo or video moment.
