Seeing the Same Individual Animal at Multiple Zoos

What is that experience like? Did the animals remember you?
I think as a keeper, it is a really fulfilling, “full circle” experience to end up working with animals you have worked with previously in your career again at a different facility. It’s sentimental — even as someone who has largely worked with large herds of hoofstock where the animals are managed more as herds than as individuals. Two of the animals were both quite young when I last worked with them, so to see them fully grown and with a new herd is really nice — especially since I had to help hand-raise one of them after her mother died.

I am sure that there are some animals that remember keepers across years and facilities, but I do not think it would be safe to say these bongo and eland do because we do not have a clear grasp of their cognitive abilities and making any sort assumptions teeters on anthropomorphism. It is quite possible they might, but it is just as likely that they do not. All three individuals are very people friendly, in general. I’d love to be able to say that the orphaned bongo calf I raised remembered me years later, but I cannot say that with any scientific accuracy or backing.

Whenever I read this thread, I always think of a few additional examples of individual animals that I've seen in more than one zoo.

I saw the Indian rhinoceros "Yodha" at Whipsnade Zoo, Chester Zoo and Berlin Zoo. (He was born at Whipsnade in 1986 and was at Chester from 1987 until 1998 when he was sent to Berlin.)

I saw the southern white rhinoceros "Mashobeni" at Whipsnade Zoo, London Zoo and Glasgow Zoo. (For many years, she was kept at London Zoo with the northern white rhinoceros "Ben"; she was sent to Glasgow Zoo in 1986 shortly after "Ben" was transferred to Dvur Kralove.)

Marwell Zoo had a pair of black rhinoceros.
The male "Kes" was born at London Zoo in 1978; the female "Katie" was born at Whipsnade in 1979. I saw "Kes" at London and Marwell and "Katie" at Whipsnade and Marwell.

Finally, as a change from rhinos, I saw the same proboscis monkey in both Stuttgart (Wilhelma) and New York (Bronx).

I've thought of some more, quite a few UK black rhino;

Parky- Whipsnade and Chester(and maybe Port Lympne as well)
Esther. London and Chester(?)
Rosie- London, Chester & Port Lympne.
Quinto. Chester & Whipsnade.
Emma(?) Chester & Whipsnade.
Bwana Mkubwa. Whipsnade & London.
Zuri. Paignton & Chester( though not absolutely sure which one she was at Chester).

Some more gorillas; males- both named Kumba, at both London & Chessington, and vice versa- The Chessington one after his return to Chessington again also. Female Kaja- Howletts and Chessington.

A couple more Orangutans. Alex- London & Edinburgh. Anak. London & Chester.

London Elephants at Whipsnade.
Karishma(elephant) Twycross & Whipsnade.
Rest of Twycross Elephant group at Blackpool.

I also saw a single male Chapman's Zebra several times at Whipsnade. I later discovered he was the original group stallion at Marwell, where I knew him well. He was appararently the oldest in Europe, around 38 when he died.

I too saw this Chapman's zebra stallion many times at both Marwell and Whipsnade. He is listed in "Longevity of Mammals in Captivity" (Weigl; 2005) as holding the longevity record for a Chapman's zebra. According to this book, he arrived at Marwell on 12th January 1970 and was sent to Whipsnade on 18th July 1991 where he was was still alive on 12th August 2004 at an estimated age of thirty-six. And he lived for some years after this.

I'm sure there are many other instances of individual zebras that I've seen in more than one zoo. For example, I've seen a Hartmann's mountain zebra at Linton Zoo that I'd previously seen at Marwell. Similarly I've also seen a Grevy's zebra at Linton Zoo that I'd previously seen at Marwell and a Grevy's zebra at Linton Zoo that I'd previously seen at Whipsnade.

I've seen the 3 lions at Newquay zoo multiple times and then again recently at Paignton zoo where they were moved to on the 13th March 2023 I believe.

A few off of the top of my head is

Phoenix(Komodo Dragon) at San Antonio Zoo and Houston Zoo
Bowie(Asian Elephant) at Fort Worth Zoo and Oklahoma City Zoo
Ndari(Sumatran Tiger) at Zoo Miami and Fort Worth Zoo
Luna?(Ocelot) at Palm Beach Zoo and Dallas World Aquarium

there are a few others but these are all I can remember right now.

- Willy the Elephat at Disney's Animal Kingdom in April 2011, and then he was moved to Cleveland the next month.

- Cleveland Zoo's original African Elephant herd (Moshi, Jo, and Martika) when they lived at Columbus in 2009 while their exhibit was being rebuilt.

- Balawat the Sloth Bear when he used to live at Akron and transferred to Cleveland -

- Scruffy the Sun Bear when she was temporarily moved from Cleveland to Akron in 2017-18.
