Semarang Zoo

I wish I could find something good to say about Semarang Zoo but I cannot other than saying that it is a little better than Baturraden Zoo. The most 'interesting' fact about this collection was that it had literally just moved to the site at the time of my visit and yet was already dropping to bits. Semarang zoo has moved location three times since 1985 to its present site at Mangkang where it is also known as the Mangkang Zoo.

Semarang Zoo seems to be interested in acquiring dolphins, most definitely the Indo-Pacific bottlenose.

Semarang Zoo received some birds from MAS Arya Indonesia, a apparel manufacturing company. These birds include: Color-variation of green-cheeked parakeets, black-winged starling, and black-naped orioles.

Additionally, MAS Arya Indonesia donated some animal feed, like sunflower seeds, to the zoo.

With last year (2024) change in management, Semarang Zoo seems to slowly increase their quality, including in term of species number and welfare.

An November 2024 visit from Stephen Koyle of the non-profit organization Elephant Care Unchained and several local wildlife right activists appears to result in a minor shift of the remaining three Sumatran elephant (2 M:1 F) husbandry, including the phasing out of commercial elephant ride and performance as well a occasional walk along some part of the zoo ground.

Semarang has received a donation of "exotic animals" from an local travel agency group as a show of support. These animals are;
  • Four Bantam chickens
  • Four fancy pigeons
  • Seven rabbits
  • Pair of Polish chickens
  • Three whistling duck
It was also reported that Semarang Zoo has plans to acquire capybaras and a pair of Bornean orangutan (Semarang previously only have a single, mature male). The zoo is mentioned to had partnered up with Ragunan Zoo and BKSDA with acquiring more species, as well as plan to cooperate with Jember Mini Zoo in the future.

I've visited the zoo today, this one just flat out wrong.

All of the elephants are still chained even within their small exhibit, and in a twist, elephant rides are still present. My bad assumption is that the zoo "secretly" reopened these elephant rides seconds after Elephant Care Unchained doesn't "took too much attention" to them. Though, most likely, popular demands for elephant rides are unavoidable and the zoo, especially when the local government have stakes in them, sees these rides as for the "entertainment-sake" of these largely local visitors. This kind of issues are very much present at local city zoos.
