Senda El Retiro

I'm pretty sure it closed - to the public at least - several years ago. Part of the hornbill collection went to Fuengirola - although I have a feeling that they continued to maintain the birds at the old zoo site.

You´re right sooty mangabey. Sadly Senda el Retiro it's definitely closed.

Thanks guys, I thought as much when I saw the website wasn't live anymore. Pity, as I'm going to be in the area in September and have been to both the old & new Fuengirola zoos...

If you want to head an hour or two east, just outsdie the town of Almunecar, you will find Pena Escrita - one of the most peculiar zoos in western Europe. There's also a (dreadful) bird park in the town, and, I believe, an aquarium too - three zoos in one small town!

Are these just hear say rumors? Or has the Senda de Retiro Parque been re-opened recently? Or did it really close for good in 2010?

Just rumours, I believe. I finally got through to someone around today who said that there are no animals around, and part of the site is only made available for private functions (mostly weddings).
