ROCKY the African Penguin has passed away.
Seneca Park Zoo on Instagram: "The Zoo is saddened to announce the loss of Ricky, one of our beloved African penguins. Ricky was the first penguin ever hatched at Seneca Park Zoo, born on October 21, 1999, and he became a foundational member of our African penguin breeding program. While the median life expectancy for African penguins is 18 years, Ricky celebrated his 26th birthday last month. Recently, Ricky experienced difficulty molting and underwent a full veterinary evaluation, including an exam and blood work. He was found to have lost weight, and testing revealed a kidney infection resulting from underlying kidney failure. After careful assessment, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize him. Ricky was easily recognized by his distinctive “swagger” walk, spiky head feathers, and large stature. He was often seen sunning himself on the upper rocks overlooking the beach. Over the years, Ricky helped hatch four chicks of his own and selflessly fostered Bonkers’ and Ziggy’s eggs when their parents did not sit on them—raising the chicks as his own once they hatched. During feedings, he was known for muscling his way to the front of the group and always preferring to eat his capelin tail-first. Since establishing our African penguin colony, Seneca Park Zoo has hatched 114 chicks, making us one of the most successful breeding colonies among AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums. Ricky lived well beyond the median life expectancy for his species—a testament to the exceptional, dedicated care provided by our Animal Health and Animal Care teams."
