Seneca Park Zoo Seneca Park Zoo News

Its about time! I'm a bit curious about it though since the second floor has the zoos prep kitchen and zookeeper break room. I'm interested to see what animals stay in the redesign.

Well I am happy for the zoo as they met the deadline and can keep their elephants! I am hoping the herd bond well as Genny C and Lilac have been together for over 30 years. Does anyone know about the elephant population at the Jacksonville Zoo? With the two leaving, are elephants now phased out? Or did they have a few already?

I could be wrong, but I believe there are still two elephants left in Jacksonville - a male and female. Don't know what their future plans are.

With Seneca Park, how big is the exhibit (I thought I heard it was around 1/2 acre or something)?

I think 1.5-2.5 acres, not too big for 4 elephants. However, they do have a pretty nice, modern barn. But I am hoping a herd will form so they have that bonding experience. Plus the females who came from Jacksonville Zoo were shipped there in 2006 to breed. So I am hoping this is a finale move for them. It seems they are all around the same age so maybe this can be an older non breeding herd. I also think you are right there is one male and female left at Jacksonville. But now they need a third elephant to stay in the future guidelines.

Female sea lion, Marina, has died following a seizure on exhibit. Staff did what they could but it was too late. Her pup Sunny is now being hand reared and experts on orphaned sea lions have been contacted to help.

In a separate incident that day three year old female orang Bella was seriously injured. Damage was done to her jaw and several teeth were lost. She's undergone surgery and will be off exhibit for awhile.
