Hmm a lot of zoo jobs lately seem to be senior level. Dammit, why don't they employ trainees, I need a job lol.

Senior Keeper
Salary £15,745 per annum.

That works out to AUS $32,000.

This seems very low to me. Have just looked it up!

The Australian Federal Minimum Wage (currently $14.31 per hour - before tax)

So a 38 hour week $28,276.

Are things allot worse over there in the UK than first thought?

I am aware that zoo keepers are badly paid.

I think it's about £6 an hour minimum for over 18 or 19 year olds.

The current UK National Minimum wage for overs 21 is £5.73 per hour , £4.77 for 18 to 21 , £3.53 for under 18 .

Tell me about it. I've forever got an eye out for trainee positions, but tbh, I need to learn to drive before I can start applying, really. And any position that's not a trainee position is just completely out of reach. It's such a difficult career to get into.

God i know how you feel i have been trying for zoo jobs for ages had three interviews so far, being able to drive helps , i can't drive either .

I think alot of zoos tend to employ people that are known to them i know balckpool do espcially with trainees.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to do some volunteering when I can, get my face known in a few places. I spoke to someone at Marwell about volunteering a while ago, but one of the things I needed to do before this was learn to drive so I can get there and back.

Gonna be tricky, methinks.

I'm definately becoming a Marwell Volunteer once I leave the Oryx Club, and I already know quite a few of them who run the sessions, so it should be easy getting there. The leaving age for the oryx club is 17/18, so I'll hopefully be driving by then.

I was also thinking maybe Blue Reef. I know their restriction for volunteers was that you had to be 18... and now I am. Hmm, I shall have to contact them soon. The more places, the better, surely?
