Im not sure whether this has been posted onto Zoochat yet, I only stumbled across the article today, even though it was published on the 2nd September 2010...

"The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) are requesting that the Government of Tanzania reconsider the proposed construction of a commercial road through the world’s best known wildlife sanctuary, Serengeti National Park.

They recommend that alternative routes be used that can meet the transportation needs of the region without disrupting the greatest remaining migration of large land animals in the world...."

What are your opinions on this?

In Tanzania "tings" still happen the old way. Politician makes election promises in a as yet one-party-system psychologically inclined environment and follows through on this. This without taking due consideration of relevant public authorities, scientific community and advice, the local communities interests.

It also shows up a total government attitude of non-transparency, non accountable and ignoring all public laws or the First Law of the Republic. Where it not for media powerful outside interests this would never have come to public light.

Oh, and not to mention any necessary environmental impact assessment or seeking sound scientific advice (both TANAPA and TAWIRI have been completely side-stepped as has reserve management). It is all very much hold hat and TOP to down ...
