Serows in captivity

I stumbled across a photo I took on my first visit to Berlin Zoo, back in 2012/13, I think it was, where amongst other things I saw my first and only Japanese Serow.

I know there's no more serow in European zoos, but does anyone know if there are any elsewhere? I wouldn't be surprised if there's a few in Asia....

The only ones in the USA are at Roosevelt Park Zoo in ND. Assiniboine Park Zoo and Calgary Zoo are the holders in Canada.

Japanese serow are fairly commonplace in Japanese zoos. Taiwanese serow can be seen in a few zoos in Taiwan. The other species are more few and far between and the holdings tend to be a bit more ephemeral, but Chinese and Indochinese for sure have been kept at certain zoos and rescue centres in their native range.

I thought there was somewhere in Quebec with serow as well?

Right, Granby, I forgot about there! I was looking at Canadian zoos just last night and didn't look at Quebec because of my recent trip (when Granby was closed).

The population in North America is on very thin ice, sadly.

Roosevelt has 5, Calgary 2, Assiniboine 1, and Granby should have four or five. The population is fairly inbred, and unfortunately survivorship isn’t great for young animals. It’s definitely possible to bring it back and stabilize it, but it’s an equally good chance all could be lost within the next 5-10 years :(

Anyone know who the remaining holders for Mainland/Sumatran Serows are in Asia? Now that Dusit Zoo, Bangkok has been closed for years I'm not sure where in Thailand they sent their animals.

Serows of Dusit Zoo moved to Khon Kaen Zoo , You can see Serow in Chiang mai Zoo , Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo , Khao Kheow Zoo. and some Wildlife Breeding station

Almost all major Japanese zoos keep serows. Most keep the shikoku subspecies for conservation purposes, but others have Honshu serows. I have personally seen wild serows three times. @Veno knows more about Japanese Serows in Captivity.

Currently Taipei Zoo has 23 Taiwan Serows, 2 females are being exhibited.
