The permission was granted by the forestry administration to legally keep a protected or CITES species in China. You'll need a different permission to legally import one. The zoo had been granted permissions for various species in the past such as silvery lutung, clouded leopard and satyr tragopan, none of which came to fruition.

Sad news. Male gorilla Dango passed away on March 15, 2025 due to sudden cardiac death with 33 years old. Its two wives and two male offspring still live in Shanghai Zoo.
