That is quite fast on arrival. I suppose the mating took place at Nantong Forest Wildlife Park. Anyhow, it is a first for Shanghai Zoo and hopefully of many! I assume they now have 7 or 8 Laotian langurs?

@YuanChang, do you have any information how big their Francois leaf monkey group is?

There are currently four leaf monkeys on public display, three of which are adults.

1) I was under the impression the Laotian langurs were more ... than 3+1?
2) What about the Francois langurs? Their numbers and are they still breeding?

BTW: Shanghai Zoo provided Rotterdam Zoo with their first Francois langurs in the 1990's. These are breeding well and I think that group is now 5-6 members.

When I visited the Shanghai Zoo in late March, I saw about 5 or 6 Francois langurs, including cubs.

The information I received is that about 6 Francois langurs are not on display in the backcourt. Currently, there seem to be fewer Francois langurs at Shanghai Zoo than before, perhaps due to the impact of the epidemic, some individuals have been transported.

Shanghai Zoo to cooperate with Hangzhou Safari Park to breed sun bears and dholes.
Contrary to the global trend, is sun bear captivity breeding more successful in China? I also heard that a sun bear might be sent to Tennoji Zoo and two siamangs to Shanghai, as part of the long-standing exchange program between the two zoos. Do you happen to know more about this?

In the second half of 2023, the Shanghai Zoo successfully bred a sun bear cub. This is the most recent record of breeding sun bears in the Shanghai Zoo.

Overall, in large zoos in China (especially in the south), the sun bear is indeed a relatively common but not particularly common species. Some zoos such as Shanghai Zoo have been breeding in recent years, but further cooperation is needed to ensure the sustainability of this animal in Chinese zoos. I have heard about the exchange of siamang with Tennoji Zoo, but I am not sure about the details.

Hi, I am from Singapore and will be visiting Shanghai in October this year, I have been looking at photos posting of Shanghai Zoo as I am very interested in the birds exhibit there. However, I notice that very few bird photos are uploaded recently and fear that might not be much birds to view when I visit this wonderful zoo. Please advise,. Thank you

As you said, the bird species in Shanghai Zoo are not very rich, most of them are common species in zoos. The Fairy pitta is no longer in the public display area.

Thank you for info, however, already booked my trip, will try my best to look for wild birds inside the zoo
