Shedd Aquarium Shedd Aquarium

I think I missed the shorebird aviary in the video, can someone direct me?

It's interesting to see a general consensus around the reef tank that removing it will be a problem. I do think a lot of this is because the video and information really fails to tell us what 'Wonder of Water' is -- yes, there's a rendering, and a reference to the saltwater tank containing live coral, and I understand wanting to drive the relationship between saltwater and freshwater... but live coral is already present in Wild Reef and I would go as far as to say not even a selling point for a zoo nerd. They've been coy about what animals will be there and I think that's either a big mistake, or extremely telling.

According to the Aquarium's social media, the Caribbean Reef exhibit in the center of the historic rotunda will close August 14 for the first phase of the Aquarium's Centennial Commitment.

Glad the animals are getting a better habitat, but this is a tough one. It's one of the most iconic entrances to any zoo or aquarium in the country.

One of the most amazing things to me about the Shedd is how they can have such nice exhibits while maintaining so much of the original architecture. The place has a "feel" to it without a doubt. A little of that will leave with the Caribbean Reef tank.

Wow, I really regret not taking more time looking at the exhibit. I figured that there would be no way it would go anywhere and just skimmed by. It is an iconic exhibit that will surely be missed.

I was really hoping to get a visit in before the tear the thing up, possibly next weekend, so really disappointed they're jumping right into it at three days' notice. I honestly feel a little put off by the rush. If anything, I'd have put an effort to keep the old reef exhibit as long as possible, until the new tunnel was ready to be populated.

I went to the Shedd Aquarium last night as part of the free Illinois resident nights this August. How lucky I was to get to enjoy the Caribbean Reef tank one last time. I had no idea it was closing so quick and that I would be among the last to see it. Perhaps they are closing it so quickly because the backlash they have received on their social media sites and by closing it now that prevents the backlash from growing because it is too late to save it? Well that is being a bit too cynical because they did announce renovations were starting this summer and it's already the middle of August. I wonder where to fish will go? I don't see why Nickel the sea turtle couldn't go into the large Wild Reef tank.

The shows in the Oceanarium have changed since the pandemic. They are much shorter, maybe 10 minutes. The shows were much longer before the pandemic and involved lots of animals.

I could be wrong but it looks like the Wild Reef and new guitarfish. The fish looked smaller than I remember the original one that was named Lucille. Again, maybe I'm wrong. Wild Reef remains an outstanding exhibit.

I do love the main galleries but I can see where some would say they are starting to looking a bit tired, dated, and small. Of note, I enjoy seeing the Bering Wolffish. I should know the answer to this next question since I went to the Shedd as kid in the 80's, but I cannot remember, what used to be where Amazon Rising is now?

Hello everyone! I would like to provide the answer to my own question of what was previously located at Amazon Rising. From a 1991 aquarium map, it was Animals of the Indo-Pacific and Animals of the Caribbean! Animals of the Indo-Pacific lives on in spectacular fashion at Wild Reef. Also there used to be an exhibit called "Tributaries" in between the gift shop in the Grand Lobby and the current Rivers of the World exhibit. Rivers of the World used to be called Animals of Warm Freshwater! How interesting! I vaguely remember this from my visits in the 80's and the very few times that I visited in the 90's. Did you see any of the sea lions? Kenny?

This is what I've begun to suspect, as I cannot think of any other reason to get rid of it.

It's not uncommon to announce a project and begin within a few weeks especially if all the permits are in line and the contract has been awarded. It costs money to delay such things. Shedd did announce Phase 1 was to begin this summer.

That's not what that post was about.

No, actually the one part of the aquarium we did not go to was the upper part of the Beluga exhibit so no opportunity to see the sea lions. I did see Kenny when I was at the Shedd in late March tough. Our main focus at the aquarium on this visit was on the historic galleries and Caribbean Reef. Also I would note that the sea otters were off exhibit.

Did Amazon Rising just close? It disappeared from the SheddGo app within the last few days.

It wasn't on the website when I looked a few days ago, and a link from google to the exhibit page redirects to the current exhibits page.
