Shenyang Wildlife Park news:
On Dec. 3, 2000 this park was opened 17 km away from the city. After financial difficulties, the park was closed for some time in 2006 and finally reopened on April 30, 2014 after extensive renovation.

After a total of 6 Giant Pandas had already been borrowed for some time in recent years, four Giant Pandas arrived in the park on Sept. 17, 2017. As usual in the last years in Chinese zoos, an architecturally interesting complex was also completed for these animals. More information and pictures can be found in the following links:

I have visited this zoo in February this year, and will soon be uploading photos. It has its ups and downs, but the ups are pretty good indeed. It is also quite respected in the Chinese zoo scene; I visited because I read an article by the head of reptiles at Beijing Zoo who said that Shenyang represented the future of Chinese zoos.

If I have a paper copy (which I can't remember) it will be in a box thousands of miles away but often Chinese zoos just have a very basic map on the back of the ticket.

Because it was so cold that day I don't think I took all that many photos, but hopefully there will be one of a map on a sign.

I am convinced the newish style of zoo is the future for China. Although Shenyang still has a number of pretty awful exhibits (seals, primates, vultures etc), it also has a lot of good stuff, including some really excellent enclosures for larger primates and hoofstock. On the day of my visit it was so perishingly cold that the air was leeching power from my battery, and flexibility from my fingers so I haven't so many photos from my phone (I haven't got around to processing my point and click card yet).

Noteworthy features:

A decent reptile house.
An attractive panda house.
Three large tiger exhibits.
A gorgeous wolf enclosure.

and something that really appeals to me: beautiful murals painted on natural rock.

There is a lot of work still to be done to create the first genuinely good Chinese zoo, but many of the clues and pieces can be found in places like Shenyang.

There are still three rhinos there, but I don't know their names.

By looking up the white rhino genealogy my friend and I found the names of the three rhinos, unfortunately the last of them (again, we don't know his name, maybe it was the male) had passed away around 2016 and the three white rhinos now on display were introduced in 2017.

By today, Shenyang Zoo has built 11 new exhibits and introduced 15 species of animals (including the Crested Ibis and Golden snub-nosed monkey)
