Shepreth Wildlife Park Shepreth Wildlife Park News

I was there last Sunday, but must have missed the signs about Sumatran tigers.
If you have been recently, did you see the Ocelot ? All signage has been removed. Also do you know whether they only have one Maned wolf now ?

Ocelot went to somewhere near Czech republic in September. Exhibit is empty, but they have plans to do something with it when the Lynx dies (pretty old). Plan would be as it's a breeding group of Sumatran Tigers coming, to improve the exhibit so they can separate and use the other exhibit for mother and cubs when happens or the male and vice versa. Then the other one of the three exhibits will be adapted for a smaller cat.

They have a pair of Pardine Genets now, who have a cool exhibit which spreads over 2/3 areas. not sure if you saw them ?

Yes just the one Maned Wolf now, and again was told this is old and will be phased out for a new species over the next year or two.

Thanks for the information. I didn't see either of the genets unfortunately.

I love Maned Wolf apart from the usual problem of seeing them (very hidey) and it seems most places are going out of them. Didn't they establish a viable breeding population in European Zoos or have they just been deemed to be boring (wrongly obviously).

The "Pardine" Genets floating around in various collections are also a lot paler and more gracile than is the case in true Pardine.

Indeed, I agree with @TeaLovingDave, the "pardine" genets I saw at Wingham (and probably those at Shepreth - I hope to visit soon to confirm) don't look much like that species and it makes sense that they have some feline genet in them. True pardines have a more dog-like face, closer to civets than cats. Also, the coloration is really off. It's a shame they're not pure-bred, but at least I'm not alone in suspecting they weren't.

The Shepreth animals *are* the ones you saw at Wingham I believe :)

As I have noted before, I suspect it isn't so much a case of them not being pure-bred and more a case of complete misidentification; the private keeper from whom most (if not all) the Pardine floating around can trace their origin - both true and dodgy - kept both Pardine and Feline, but given the fact they were the first to successfully breed the former species in the UK I'd be very much surprised if they immediately followed this up by muddying the genepool :P as such I reckon Wingham got their wires crossed about which species they were getting, thought they had Pardine rather than Feline, and the confusion spread from there once the animals bred at Wingham started to be sent elsewhere.

Ahhh that makes sense, sorry!

The initial pair moving in will be a mother and daughter - so likely to be some time before a breeding situation comes about.

A female Aardvark has recently arrived.
Interesting, I was there last month and didn't see signs of a potential enclosure being built. Any idea where they may be going? Only place I can think of is the large new Porcupine paddock( I think where the emu were previously ), but there is no viewing of the indoor area, so they would hardly ever be seen.
