Shocking news from Surabaya Zoo

They give no respect even to 'holy' and 'valuable' White Tigers!
And the giraffe skeleton is mage wrong :( boiled bones, permanently stained with brown grease, and lower parts of the ribs are missing...

@vogelcommando, please relax this is the upteenth time this storyline has been out, it has been regurgitated 15 times and over ....

Now, it is bloody nothing new what that K.B. Surabaya has A) an issue in procedures and logistics of animal management and thus animal welfare, B) an over-crowding / overpopulation management issue with quite a number of species (and not inbreeding, but by over-breeding ...), C) lack of municipal / state funding for proper staffing, their training, best practice in animal management and population / collection planning and veterinary care.

Further, there is a continueing political struggle between old zoo management, local municipalitity and interim zoo management (from PKBSI President and best zoo in the region Taman Safari Indonesia in Bogor).

I really suspect / assume that at long last TSI organisation will win out and provide a much better funding base and future for the zoo. Currently, by way of - even - (inter-)national transfers the over-crowding problem is being addressed.

This upteenth storyline is testament to the inherent lack of interest among serious media to research and update their stories and provide real information .... This is even more so a problem in Western media that like to picture Indonesian zoos as backward and living in the Dark Ages.

Now, I am not saying a inherent lack of animal welfare standards, sufficient care and quality in animal management ..., but things are not a stalemate.

Also the younger and education / scientifically qualified generations of Indonesians do have an interest in nature, wildlife conservation and better animal care in zoos in Indonesia ... and if we would like to change things we better support their initiatives in the face of lack of interest, corruption, power-politics of the local political elite ... (vis a vis here Medan Zoo and the private volunteer group working to improve standards and exhibits there ...).

POST SCRIPTUM: I really do hate the sensationalist reporting self-evident here (as is also the case in Indian zoos .... and beyond where the animal welfarist fraternity have more say than expertise).

VC, Kb, EM, The Daily mail nearly always has an anti animal/ zoo stance in it's often old reporting, It can't be relied upon to be impartial or to look on the bright side as far as zoos are concerned.
Also, they never have a foot note by the author to say what interest they have in the story or what angle they are coming from which leaves the average Mail reader thinking this is normal practice in foreign zoos, and probably British ones too.
