Short news from European Zoos

I think the male was born in Dortmund Zoo. There are only 2 breeding pairs of giant otter in Europe at the moment - the pair in Dortmund and the pair in Hagenbeck who are currently raising their first surviving litter. Dortmund had their first litter with the new breeding pair approx. in 2005. The current litter is the 3rd with surviving cubs; they had a lot of problems with many cubs dying in the first weeks. This is why I am so exited that all 5 of the last litter are still alive! The young male in Chestnut is either the only cub from the first litter or from the second.
 
The Zoo Halle in Germany has again great sucess with the malayan tigers: tigress Girl gave birth to 3 healthy cubs shortly ago. The zoo has the only breeding group of this tiger subspecies in Europe, with one adult male and two breeding females. Now both females have currently a litter of 3 cubs. Offspring from the last years have been sent to the Tierpark Berlin and the Zoo Prague.

Halle also has sucess with Angola lions, 2 female cubs have been born a few weeks ago and they are doing well. The mother had a lot of problems with raising her cubs and lost a couple of litters, but these 2 are doing well and the family has been reunited (male Bono, mother Lissa, the one year old, partially hand-raised cub Luna and the 2 new babys).
 
Some news from the other Paris Zoo (Jardin des Plantes).
They recently received a pair of Satyre tragopan (Tragopan satyra), one snow leopard (Uncia uncia).. another will come soon, and one clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa).. again, waiting for another one!

The gender of the "china-leos" in Berlin is: 1,2 and sorry, but at Hagenbeck, too: 1,2! One female died meanwhile. By the way, Hagenbeck is the european studbookkeeper of chinese leopards (panthera pardus japonensis) for the EEP!

The 2,1 giant otters (pteronura brasiliensis)in Hamburg are doing well and nearly as large as their parents...;)

I thought paris was planning to keep only 2 species in the cat-house from now on? they still have the chinese leopard as well? Very beautifull species though, so i will not complain ;)

@ Sitara: Does hamburg already know where the otter-offspring is going to move to? Or will they stay to form a family group? I hope to see them in the netherlands on day...
 
I have heard (but it is not sure now!), that one of them is for the zoo in France who is start keeping giant otters. Not more at the moment, but I will try to keep you up to date...;)
 
Sitara : The zoo you're talking about is Bioparc de Doué la Fontaine (probably the most beautiful zoo in France in terms of enclosures and general setting).

Trebaruna : They're planning to put at least four species in that big old and unsuitable cat house... Luckily nothing bigger than the chinese leopards...
So far we have one clouded leopard, one snow leopard (both waiting for a partner) and three chinese leopards (one male and two youngsters... female died some months ago).
 
Pedro, or anyone?

Am i correct that the sifaka group at paris finally had some female offspring after the string of males? According to ISIS they had 2 offspring the last 6 months and if i'm correct at least one of them is female? Or are they all males again? Would be good for the breeding program to get at least some more females...

Now i'm asking questions, according to a german site the Skearup Zoo in Denmark holds Japanese Serow('s?), does anyone know if this is true? It ain't in Toddy's database on zoos.dk...

The info i recieve from Skaerup Zoo is very limited, and their website does not have many species listed :(. However, the serows sound interesting, and i could write an e-mail to Skaerup Zoo and ask if you want?

hm.. weird. When i was there years ago, they were rebuilding the place and there was a sign that after the remodelling they would only house 2 species... Or my french is even worst than i thought :D
Is it really still unsuitable? I saw some pics from the remodelling-activities and that looked nice. Do you have some pics of the result?

It seems that serows are becoming more abundant :) cool.
 
There was a sign yes... I also saw it... and I was also quite surprised when I heard they were bringing clouded and snow leopards... Most of french zoo-lovers were also surprised and many of them didn't react well to this news.
Concerning the exhibits, they tried to make it look nice but it still remains small and very old for housing this type of animal... there's almost no security for keepers and, for me, it's trully a miracle that nobody got injured or killed recently.

With the light reflection in the glasses, it's almost impossible to get a decent picture of the inside and the animals (seeing them would already be quite a performance!)
 
Thanks for the pic. A part from the space, it doesn't even look that bad for the animal actualy. A lot of places to hide, climb etc.

Are they going to renovate the monkeyhouse as well?
 
I don't know for the monkeys. The young male orangutan born a few years ago died and the last young got transfered. They also lost some Cercopithecus and Lophocebus species... but no renovations planned for now concerning monkeys.
 
First of all, your site is perfect for things like this Toddy ;) Thanks for setting it up! Wondered how a little zoo in Denmark could get these animals, but since Overloon in Holland also acquired a pair apparantly it's possible!

@ Pedro, no news on the Sifaka's? :( I loved this species at Apenheul this year and i hope they'll do as well as the Cocquerel's in the USA...
 
Borås Djurpark in Sweden got a cape buffalo calf recently. It's their first one since 11 years. I'm going to Borås next year and i'm gonna see it.
 
I don't no if it's mentioned somewhere else but a female Asiatic lion give birth last year to 3 cubs in their new enclosure in the Planckendael Zoo (Belgium). It's a first for that zoo.
 
Here's some news and a half. Negotiations are underway to transport the last remaining northern white rhino's from Dvur Kralové to a sanctuary somewhere in Africa (i strongly expect somewhere in South Africa). There, they should be joined by the last remaining northern whites from Garamba National Park to try and save the species. More news when the rumours continue...
