Short news from European Zoos

Duisburg Zoo revamped their existing Giant Otter exhibit and received a young male from Hamburg and a young female from Dortmund. At the moment 5 zoo's keep this marvelous (my favourite) species, 4 of which have a breeding pair and 2 of which actually breed (the other two only recently received a very young pair).

Genetic diversity aside (which now consist of 5 founders, 2 of which are siblings), the future of this species at the moment looks very good! Two zoo's have real plans to exhibit this species in the near future, Heidelberg (who should have rebuild their old tapir enclosure by now and received some animals, but nothing is happening yet) and in the further future they are planned in Leipzig's "Gondwanaland" (huge tropical rainforest greenhouse, now under construction).

May 16, giraf born in Artis (Amsterdam Zoo). The little one is a boy and named Adam and the first born of mother Iwana, who was born in Artis in 2004. Father is Asali who is also the father of Niek who was born three months ago.
 
Burgers' Zoo was supposed to get spectacled (dusky?) langurs from the States, but that bounced on paperwork so i feared they wouldn't come at all. They have now announced the arrival of this species from England. Does anyone know how many Hwl/PL and Twycross have?

Great species, can't wait to see them!

Twycross have been keeping this species since the very early days of the collection. It was one of the first 'special' primate species they obtained and virtually the only Langurs kept in the Uk at that time. With the striking bright orange babies they also featured on the covers of their guidebooks too.

I'm not sure if these are descendants of that original group. I hope they continue at Twycross and as 5 isn't very many I wonder if they can spare any?
 
A lot of news this year in the Swedish zoos. Parken Zoo has got a lot of new species this year. Some of them are: Amur Leopard, Pallas Cat, Visayan Varty Pig, Sand Cat, Red-bellied Lemur, Pudu, Armadillos and more. Borås Zoo recently got two cheetah cubs, and an elephant baby is coming later this year.

Furuvik, another zoo in Sweden, has a new orangutan house this year. And Borås Zoo has said that they will build a new brown bear exhibit next year. It's gonna be bigger than the exhibit that they have now, and it will have a big waterfall and a wooden bridge through the exhibit. They will also have bongos next year. :):)

Can you elaborate more on the elephants at Boras?
 
Jwer, You mentioned that Leipzig and Heidelberg will keep Giant otters in the future. Will these institutions receive the progeny of the European population or not? I just ask that because I have heard that there is a plan to bring in a new bloodline into the European population from some South American zoos.

To be honest, i don't know. At the moment Dortmund is stuck with a lot of excess offspring of their pair (which is on birthcontrol atm afaik). But the number of founders of the european population is still way too low (more or less 3 lines which are allready mixed) so more new blood is welcome.

@ Jo, if i'm correct there is a genetically good female otter available at Hamburg, but she is really young and since usually the young help with the rearing of new youngsters (and Hamburg allready have new youngsters) she might stay there for just a while longer. But i might be mixing up everything though :X (i need to ask Dortmund for the otter Studbook really :X )
 
They already tried Diptelogaster maximus on various species, including tapirs and seal-lions. It seems to work pretty well, although some animals developed the tendency to eat each other's bug...;)
