Should zoos go for purely public pleasing?

Zoos should be pleasing for the public, and good for conservation.

The main reason there are bad zoos, are because the people who run them have money,money,money on there mind, and have a bad disregard to the animals well-being.

essential every zoo should be part of conservation, because it shows that they really care, and aren't just wanting the money.

Also- A good zoo should have a mix of common and popular zoo animals (giraffes,hippos,elephants,chimps), rare species to help conservation, and a few Jems for us zoo nerds.

I believe mismanagement has seen the die out in Australian zoos.

Probably not mismanagement, more a lack of 'interest' given there are six naturalised species that are all easier to keep.
Now if it had been moose/elk... except they didn't fair to well in the South Island of NZ either...

That's an epic over-simplication and also wrong:

1. Making (even lots of) money and running a good zoo are not mutually exclusive;

2. A zoo needs "money, money, money" to keep going and aid conservation.

Unless a zoo is publicly funded (and even then to some extent) making money/profit is essential.

Absolutely right Shorts. Conservation is expensive work. A good zoo should be a conservation embassy, and that costs money.

Hard headed fundraising is needed to make zoos better, and getting a regular flow of satisfied and informed visitors is needed to keep them going.

Thanks, I think you've pretty much summed up what should be the rasion d'etre of modern zoos there. I really like the phrase, "conservation embassy" and although I wouldn't want zoos to start renaming themselves using the term it's a nice phrase for publicity purposes (if justified).
