Singapore Zoo Singapore Zoo News 2024

does anyone know which pygmy hippo lives in each of the 3 exhibits?
Afaik Miata stays in the former warthog/red river hog exhibit while Divo and Psota are in the main exhibit though I could be wrong on that. Not sure about the ones in this habitat but I usually see one of them there

In other pygmy hippo news, 2 year old Thabo is going to be transferred to Taipei Zoo and is thus off-display while preparing for the move

Heaven knows ...! What I do know is that the new younger breeding pair is M Divo and F Psota. Their calf Miata is now fully grown (born 23 February 2021) ....!

Whether they still keep the older generation breeding female Minah and male Bubu ... is anybody's guess. Male Thabo was born in 2022 - I have no recollection of any news item back then - will as has been said be transferred to Taipei Zoo soon on breeding loan. A hard guess be that Minah mated with either Bubu or the new male Divo and gave birth to Thabo in 2022.

Edit: a later Instagram confirmed that F Minah is the mother to the younger Male Thabo who celebrated his first birthday! Begs the question if male Bubu is still there or not?

Link: Mandai Wildlife Reserve on Instagram: "A very hip-hip-hippo birthday to Thabo! Our youngest pygmy hippo calf turned 1 recently, and his Animal Care Team prepared a special birthday treat made out of watermelons! Thabo was sweet enough to share it all with his mum, Minah. Spot our mother-and-son duo every Friday to Sunday at the pygmy hippo upper pool exhibit in Singapore Zoo!"

Aviary is still closed but signs have been installed inside for Philippine Crocodile, Common Hill Myna and Pied Imperial Pigeon.
That is a definite and positive development!

Do you know per chance how many Philippine crocs (I assume the Mindanao subspecies and not the critically endangered Luzon subspecies?) they have?

The Philippine croc pair were from Den Bla Planet Aquarium in Denmark

Guess they aren't being moved over to Rainforest Wild. Risky to mix crocodiles and birds but it has been done before multiple times, they also mixed Cuvier's dwarf caiman and a channel-billed toucan in the same exhibit before

As for their crocodilian collection, so far it seems to be like this:
SZ: African dwarf crocodile, Chinese alligator, false gharial, Indian gharial & Philippine crocodile
RW Asia: false gharial, saltwater crocodile & Siamese crocodile

The main thing is that the caimans were quite well-fed (fat), primarily fed on fish, and were quite reluctant to work for their meals.

Several avian-crocodilian mixes did not work out in the past (e.g Blue-breasted Kingfisher eaten by African Dwarf Crocodile, Scarlet Ibis eaten by Saltwater Crocodile, etc). Philippines are quite good jumpers, and if the keepers have been training them to leap up for food then that could be quite worrisome.

Who thought this mix would be a good idea, even the "mixed species exhibit" thread won't think of a mix like this. Do you know which zoos did those particular 2 mixes you've mentioned?

I do think they can be ...!

Anyone know where the Bla Planet Philippine crocodile pair - I assume they got a pair .... just - originated from?
EDIT: The individuals came from Eskilstrup - Krokodille Zoo and London RP Zoo.

Any more information on the original time of transfer in and any further details?

Had a little peek into the Frozen Tundra, seems like some Ranger Buddies related stuff has been added near to the former Wolverine enclosure.

Unsure if it's just for storage but I have a feeling there is something in plan for it

Bubu is still around. The 3.3 Pygmy Hippos at Singapore Zoo are males Bubu, Divo and Thabo, and females Minah, Psota and Miata.

Had another little peek into the Frozen Tundra when this thing caught my eye, probably a of water dish of some sorts which is placed on the land area of Inuka's old enclosure

For quite a few years already. But suddenly with this and the Ranger Buddies stuff I've spotted inside I have a feeling there are some plans going on

Interesting. I assume it's going to be refurbished for new animals. I haven't been to Singapore Zoo for 10 years, my last visit was back in 2011. I went to River Safari back in 2014 though.

Quite some stuff has changed since your last visit, but I'm hoping it is actually gonna be an exhibit. Though I wonder what it will be for

Frozen Tundra/Animal Playground is under the charge of the show department so some of the show animals might be put on display in the exhibit spaces. The indoor area is supposed to be open to visitors in late November or December.

Noticed that Fragile Forest has new signages now, with one species the Duskt Turtle-dove (Streptopelia lugens) being signed as well. Does anyone know if this species is actually under Mandai's collection as its not listed on Zootiertliste
