Size Of Your Local Zoo in Acreage Survey

@CZJimmy: make sure on your list that you have only developed acres to be more accurate. For example: the Toronto Zoo doesn't have all 700 acres developed.

that's what i've tried to do but I don't know Toronto's correct figure (it didn't seem right!!), so I was just taking it from the response in this thread (Chester's total land area is about 495 acres I believe, but I've only listed it's current developed plot)

Blackduiker

Just thought i'd combine the results given so far to create a "league table" of sorts for comparison (hope blackduiker doesn't mind!)

1. Toronto Zoo (Canada) - 710 acres
2. Whipsnade Zoo (UK) - 600 acres
2. Port Lympne Wild Animal Park (UK) - 600 acres
3. Marwell Zoo (UK) - 140 acres
4. Phoenix Zoo (USA) - 125 acres
5. Chester Zoo (UK) - 124 acres (will rise to about 198 and the zoo owns even more)
6. Los Angeles Zoo (USA) - 113 acres
7. Jacksonville Zoo (USA) - 110 acres
8. Dallas Zoo (USA) - 95 acres
9. Woodland Park (USA) - 92 acres
10. Howlett's Wild Animal Park (UK) - 90 acres
11. Colombus Zoo (USA) - 80 acres (will rise to 170 acres)
12. Fort Worth Zoo (USA) - 64 acres
13. Belfast Zoo (UK) - 55 acres
14. London Zoo (UK) - 36 acres
15. Valencia BioParc (Spain) - approx 20 acres (will rise to approx 25 acres)
16. Newquay Zoo (UK) - 13 acres
17. Boise Zoo (USA) - 11 acres

Be my guest. As a matter of fact, maybe we could see a fuller tally every 30 responses or so.

Taronga Zoo is 70 acres

:p

Hix

Fort Wayne is 38 developed acres but owns other land. Including parking lots is problematic: we are in a city park and share all of our lots with other activities going on in the park.

chester owns 350 acres of land 50 in use, it will go up to 80 when it expands and 300 isn't in use.

As I posted on the first page, Chester use 50 HECTARES, not ACRES

A lot of Chester's land will be developed in the coming years, but as things stand at the moment, the current zoo is 111 acres (according to wikipedia)

EDIT: wikipedia also says that the zoo occupies 50 hectares, but owns 200 more. The new developments will bring it to 80 hectares.

So about 124 acres are currently being used which will expand to about 198 acres in the not to distant future.

I've added a couple more to the list:

  1. Monarto Zoo (AUS) - 3580 acres (open range - recently expanded from 2470 acres)
  2. Western Plains Zoo (AUS) - 741 acres (open range)
  3. Toronto Zoo (Canada) - 710 acres
  4. Whipsnade Zoo (UK) - 600 acres
  5. Port Lympne Wild Animal Park (UK) - 600 acres
  6. Werribee Open Range Zoo (AUS) - 556 acres
  7. Marwell Zoo (UK) - 140 acres
  8. Phoenix Zoo (USA) - 125 acres
  9. Chester Zoo (UK) - 124 acres (will rise to about 198 and the zoo owns even more)
  10. Los Angeles Zoo (USA) - 113 acres
  11. Jacksonville Zoo (USA) - 110 acres
  12. Dallas Zoo (USA) - 95 acres
  13. Woodland Park (USA) - 92 acres
  14. Howlett's Wild Animal Park (UK) - 90 acres
  15. Colombus Zoo (USA) - 80 acres (will rise to 170 acres)
  16. Australia Zoo (AUS) - 72 acres (247 acres actually available now, but will rise to 500 acres)
  17. Fort Worth Zoo (USA) - 64 acres
  18. Belfast Zoo (UK) - 55 acres
  19. Taronga Zoo (AUS) - 52 acres
  20. Perth Zoo (AUS) - 47 acres
  21. London Zoo (UK) - 36 acres
  22. Valencia BioParc (Spain) - approx 20 acres (will rise to approx 25 acres)
  23. National Zoo & Aquarium (AUS) - 20 acres
  24. Adelaide Zoo (AUS) - 20 acres
  25. Newquay Zoo (UK) - 13 acres
  26. Boise Zoo (USA) - 11 acres

Durrell has 32acres in total, but I think this is inclusive of the nature reserve, parkland, 16th century manor house and up to the International Training Centre at Les Noyers :)
