Small European Mammals in North America

I’m very curious about what kind of small European mammals are houses across North America (dormice, moles, rats, etc)
So if anyone knows any kept I’d very much appreciate the insights.

I'm pretty sure that's essentially it - next closest species I can think of is Pine Marten. Maybe a dormouse or two somewhere, but I've not heard of any. No European Hedgehog, no bats, shrews, or moles.

European mammals in NA is basically limited to lynx, Red Deer, a ton of Fallow Deer, Harvest Mouse, questionably pure Mouflon, and the one or two remaining Chamois at Toronto I believe. Very limited species variety.

There aren’t ibex in North American zoos? Thought there were but I could be wrong. Unless Nubian ibex isn’t European.
Okay thanks for the info. Guess that’s why Toronto (and most other NA zoos) feature their European collection with Asian animals as well.

And I guess wild boar isn’t considered strictly European anymore even if it is native to Europe.

Given European mouflon are widely considered descendants of early feral sheep rather than a genuine Ovis gmelini subspecies these days, I think their purity is more of a moot point than it was a decade ago.

@snowleopard uploaded a picture a few years ago of a European Red Squirrel enclosure at Discovery Wildlife Park in Canada.

I have no idea if the species is still kept there, though.

San Diego Zoo and possibly a few other places had European Wildcats a while back, but I'm pretty sure they're all gone now.

Is it very difficult importing animals from Europe into the US?

Aren't all "pine martens" in North America actually American Martens?

Ibex have been almost completely phased out. The Nubian ibex is still present in one or two collections and the unacredited Hemker Park Zoo in Minnesota has Alpine ibex.

During a previous conversation about European animals in American zoos, I was pointed to the fact that while we use North American subspecies of brown bear, wolf, caribou, moose, fox and so forth these can all be seen as European animals at a species level.

There are, but Alpine Ibex is nearly gone. And no, Nubian Ibex is not European, it's African.

It's not strictly European no. I believe many of the ones in NA are mixed to some degree.

Highly doubt it's still there six years later, if even correct in the first place.

I think they are all gone, yeah.

Well more than that, still a good handful around. Not real likely to stay that way though due to some issues.

This is indeed true, they are all holarctic species that can be used for both continents as well as Asia. Worth noting Moose is split into NA and Eurasian species by some authors, and this seems to be becoming the preferred treatment.

West Caucasian turs are present in captivity. The Hemker Park Zoo has a herd of about 20 including the five or so kids born this year.

This zoo has three Alpine ibex. They don't breed them.

Who else has ibex? That's good news in my book as I'd like to see them one more time before they disappear from captivity.

See below - I also grabbed Alpine Ibex/West Caucasian Tur since they were right next to each other. Should be mostly accurate, though I think SDZ no longer has Nubians.
