Chester Zoo Small news at Chester Zoo

The guenons were taken offshow in June or July. They are leaving the collection and the last I heard were living in the animal breeding unit (offshow). The reason for their removal is because of bullying by the new mandrills.

With that thought in mind, it would be nice to keep the moat, but have glass viewing for visitors from the building side [

I don't think the moats serve any purpose except to 'look nice' and they use up a large amount of space which could be better used as part of the enclosures. That is my criticism of them in all zoos- also they are dangerous for Apes, but probably not for monkeys. I would favour filling them in and replacing with glass walls along the existing perimeter path.

They weren't there yesterday and the I couldn't see their sign either...

Which reminds me, does anyone know why (or where) the squirrels have gone from outside the elephant house (no junglefowl in those exhibits either)?

I saw a Red Bellied Squirrel last Sunday. The sign for the Prevost's had gone, so im assuming the male has left.

ISIS shows no Prevosts at Chester any more, but still shows 2.1 belly-banded (red bellied) squirrels, although both signs had been taken down.

Remembering now, on the ZooLex article of Elephants Of the Asian Forests it does say that the squirrels (plus the Tree Shrews) were only temporary and would be replaced by rarer squirrels and tree shrews.

Perhaps this explains the Prevost's dissapearance.

Believe the Prevosts Squirrel died,as for the others not a clue but was at the zoo today and both the Squirrel enclosures were empty of any sign of life and all signs were blank.

zoogiraffe, how long do you think we will have to wait before the zoo makes an announcement on the new species?

I believe a male Prevost's Squirrel goes to Tropiquaria Wildlife Park and join the female group.

i know you guys are all fans of chester zoo and im sure its great. but ive looked at zillions of photos, and even though i know you shouldnt judge something until youve been....but talking specifically about the exhibits. not one of them has yet jumped out and grabbed me as being realy good or really innovative. is this the case or are they just bad photos.

I agree with you to a certain degree. There is quite a few enclosures at chester that while adequate to house the species they do, are not very appealing to look at.

All of Chester’s later developments are all really impressive.

Chester has such a diverse collection, (a lot of which is helped by the size of the place) which makes the zoo impressive.

pretty fair point I guess if you judge from photos, but there are a number of great exhibits that perhaps do not come off as well as they do in person.

Realm of the Red Ape
Twilight Zone
Penguin Pool - great setup for breeding in particular
Chimpanzee island - the heaviest planted ape enclosure that i've seen, (no hot wire!)
Condor Cliffs and Europe on the Edge are great aviaries
Monkey Islands
Elephant House
Spirit of the Jaguar

As Taun said, most of the new exhibits have been very good and with the new expansion, most of the zoo will probably be upgraded even further.

I think what makes Chester so popular is the overall standard of the exhibits and diversity of collection. I can't say that there is a 'bad' enclosure at Chester...

Its true. Though there is no one exhibit that is truly outstanding, but several(as listed above) are modern and well designed. This, coupled with the very large and diverse collection and the permanent 'go ahead' feel that emanates from the Zoo is what has kept Chester ahead of the rest of the UK field. In my opinion -and many others here- it has always ranked as the UK's best zoo by quite a wide margin.

According to ISIS Chester have a pair of Kirk's dik-dik . Anyone know if this is correct ? If so a nice addition to the collection .
