Visited the zoo today the Azaras Agouti young born last year have moved in to the on-show aviary in the rare Parrots breeding centre,also the breeding pair of Azaras Agouti now have 2 more youngsters to look after,the Rebuilt croc pool is starting to look good but the member of staff i talked 2 doubts it will be done for Easter.

Zoogiraffe, do you have any pictures of the latest croc developments (or any on the current developments)?

Also, any sign on construction for the butterfly house?
 
I was there too. I was testing a new camera and other gear, but I didn't have a zoom lens to shoot the croc pools. It looks as if the pools are done, but they are working on the barriers - it looks to me as if there will be glass windows above the wall. There is still a lot of landscaping and planting to do. I wonder if they will net the top to keep the birds out.
No sign of action on the butterfly house: the crane is still in the paddock. There were a few people working on the bridge and a digger was creating the bottom of a ramp next to the path into the bats.
One new development that puzzled me was that they have drained the moat of the old orang outdoor enclosure, put up a new overhanging wall and then put a high timber fence around most of it, including a small flower bed. The only notice nearby referred to a new picnic area - but that didn't add up at all. Does anyone know what's brewing there?

gentle lemur, when I was there, a sign was up saying that the old orang island was being modified for Sibu...

I don't know anything about a new picnic area?

Do you have pics so I can clarify?
 
I think the picnic area was just an old sign (possibly the wrong way round). If they're going to put Sibu there, no-one will see him unless they cut some holes in the fence :rolleyes:

Photos downloading as I type. But I have to use new software with the new camera, so you may need to be patient. BTW the wrinkled hornbills are paired up and I saw the female working on the entrance of her nest hole while the male watched with great interest. There is a female (I think) great hornbill in the aviary next to the croc pools - who was calling to the old male. Have they had to replace any birds or are they switching with the Elephant House pair? I didn't go into the Elephant House, so I don't know what's happening there.

I noticed the picnic area sign last week. The other sign says it will be a new area for Sibu. It will be strange if they create a new picnic area, the big lawn is just across the path and the new lawn across from the flamingos is just a short walk away.

On Feburary 17th there was only the one Great Hornbill in the elephant house and only one in the Tropical Realm. The three or four aviaries closest to the croc pool were closed off to the public presumably brcause of the croc pool.

What exactly has happened with the hornbills.
 
Yes zoomania, I noticed this too.

I also noticed only one female great indian hornbill in the old gorilla enclosure.

I saw three individuals, two females and one male.

A repeat of zoomania's question!
 
Can I Just ask a quick question. Are there still Javan Rhino Hornbills in the aviary next to the Snowy Owls and Mauritius Kestrels. I Forgot to visit there.
 
No only the owls and kestrels. The spare hornbill has been gone for quite some time

Sorry, who is Sibu :o

Just back from the zoo and there does seem to be a lot of building going on at the moment.

We went to see the big cats but unfortunately due the high winds the tigers and lions were not out. However the Jaguars were :D so all was not lost.
 
Watching life in cold blood now, showing galapagos tortoises...

Does anyone know what plans (if any) Chester has for their galapagos tortoises once they grow to big to display in the tropical realm? I'd be disappointed to see them leave the collection...

I don't know, but if I where them, I'd build an outdoor lawn enclosure near Islands in Danger. It'll probably be quite a while, before they're massive won't it?
 
I Dont think the zoo will get rid of them. The comments maid in the zoo magazine at the time of their arrival would suggest to me that they will be kept.

I Agree with Chris in saying that a big lawn near Islands In Danger would suit them fine
