Manchester Museum is part of the University of Manchester. It has had a small collection of living reptiles and amphibians for many years. This area was entirely remodelled a few years ago and now has some unusual species, including Fiji banded iguanas. Mr Hornbill and I have put several photos into the Gallery this month.

Don`t forget that my picture of the Fijian Banded Iguana went up first!

Does anyone know if there are plans to get some female zebras in the near future? They've been holding males only since 2003 I think...

Went today taking advantage of the good weather.
Life on the Lily Pad is a lot of posters, two vivaria with poison arrow/tree frogs, and a tank with caecilians in it. I managed to see two of them. The zoo is getting two “a-pods” which are fancy containers for amphibians. They will be biosecure, ie keepers have to shower before going in there, and there will be no display facilitators. The keeper I spoke to mentioned the rancho frogs but couldn’t be specific about other new species.

Grevy's zebra - still all males, although the (old) sign talks of moving all but one away and getting some females when the studbook keeper decides, but nothing definite.

I liked the new bridge, and saw the anoas properly for the first time in years. Second half still not finished but should give views over the Indian rhino yards.

The cheetah enclosures look ok, but will be pretty full with 6 adults even before breeding begins.

New fence around the old orang utan island, in the regulation ugly snot green of RORA which I still can’t get used to. The orangs were outside which is the first time I have seen them there, the enclosures are spacious and look really good. Didn’t see the new baby though. The area on your right as you look down from the ramp exiting RORA (which used to be the aviary on the side of the orang house) has a low fence around it and looks like it is an enclosure for something – don’t know what, waterfowl maybe? Few new picnic table near the flamingos.

Patna very lively in the pool. Saw Baatschi as well although not in the paddock together. No deer/antelope in the paddock.

Didn’t see the baby babirusa. Red-crowned cranes were sitting on an egg.

Philippine crocs pool coming on nicely, it has a high wall with windows in it rather than the low wall previously.

That area has been there for some time, I believe it has always been planted but only sine the RoRA has it had a fence. I don't believe chester are planing any animals for that area. However it would make a great short-clawed asian otter exhibit?

There were going to be otters in there, but I think that some of the keepers were not happy about moving the otters to another group of keepers, but I think that there may have been other reasons too.

I Dont see hy other keepers would look after them anyway. The ROTRA isnt far from the rest of the animals on the carnivire section, plus the giraffe team keeperes manage to look after the bears and coatis depite it being some distance away until the new bridge was built. As you say though there are other reasons.

The signs for the tempory holding pens and the signs in the crane/stork enclosure down by Tasavo have been taken down, also some of the water fowl have been removed,i think things are starting to move for the African walk through Avairy their, also the Wrinkled Hornbills are nesting with the female now sealed in completly.

Low fence around the bit by RORA really suggests animals are going in there, agree otters would fit.

Forgot to mention - one of the star aviaries has been demolished, I've not noticed this before.

Maned wolf enclosure flattened and fence removed but no sign of butterfly house yet.

Female warthog now has a mate.

It would be really nice to have otters in that area sharing with another mammal species, like binturong or something.

Id like to see them add animals like Malayan Tapir sor the Lion Tailed Macaques to RORA, other zoos have been sucsessful with mixing the species together

Lion-tailed Macaques might wreck the vegetation- they can be very destructive and will quickly turn grass to bare soil. They haven't done on their existing island at Chester I know, possibly because its too big or they don't go outside much.

Why would you never see the tapirs if the mixed them with orangs?

Because you cannot get a good view of the floor in some of the enclosures, and they would always hide away from the public anyway....
