Was at the zoo this afternoon with university observing various animal behaviour. During free time, went to see the lions, Asha and the cub were out, and she brought the cub right into view for everyone, the cub was walking fine, and was following Asha everywhere. Asoka on the other hand wasn't so happy, and was roaring for most of the afternoon.

There are at least 3 baby mandrills been born

The female rhino's were in separate indoor enclosures in Tsavo, but still no baby

and i had my first sighting of the spectacled bear!! oh and a bat peed all over me :(

Thats great news about the Mandrills, will have to make sure I pop in and take a look at them.

Interesting they have now seperated the rhinos, last time I was there you could see they had both areas ready incase the baby came early. Fingers crossed that it all goes well, she should hopefully have it this week as she due thurs, but you never know.

I wonder if it is the young mandrills from Colchester that have now bred , it will be great to see the group growing as it has plenty of space .

More than likely. In fact all their females, apart from the one born at Chester, originate from Colchester, as the two older ones are a mother and daughter from that group too.

Not sure if these Walkthrough plans have already been posted:

Either way here they are :)

Work has been started now, several men and diggers there today

Which species are planned for the aviary (or have I lost some converse)?
A lot of things have been mentioned for it,species i believe that have been looked at for it are Hammerkop,Von der Deckens Hornbill,White-faced Whistling Duck,Lilac-breasted Rollers,African Spoonbill,Cattle Egret,Bee-eaters(have heard at least 3 species mentioned 2 of which are only in private hands in the U.K) and Southern Bald Ibis have probably forgotten quite a few.

We could open a book . . .
I'd say hammerkop, white-faced whistlers and cattle egrets would be odds-on. On the other hand, I reckon the odds against bee-eaters are much longer and pygmy geese would be outsiders (although I'd love to see them).

pictures of hammerkop, lilac breasted roller and von der deckens hornbill were all featured on the banner displaying the plans.

Walsrode have some Pygmy Geese so may be not such an outside bet as for the Bee-eaters would say thats a good bet for say about 65-1.

More and more collections are getting into bee-eaters, lilac breasted rollers and the smaller hornbills in EAZA zoos. I think it is part of the collection plan and due to the fact EAZA zoos - being aware of the bird import ban - will need to start concentrating on establishing sustainable bird collections in Europe. I am sure writhedhornbill will be mega pleased with that.

Suffice to say, it is great that Chester is investing in an African Aviary with all of the bird species concerned. It will make the African biome more complete. I hope before long they will also build separate aviaries for crowned cranes (very endangered since couple years), secretary birds, marabou storks (also separate enclosure as they do not do anything in mega vertebrate mixed species exhibits) and vultures. :D

Jelle, Chester already keep West african black-crowned crane (ISIS list 2.2) in neighbouring aviarys to that of the new african walk through one. However, secretary birds, marabous and an african vulture species would be very impressive!

Does anyone know when the tigers got a new inside viewing window? It seems a lot larger and has a covered section for visitors to stand under. Also the window was bordered up!

The window was boarded up when I went on thursday but I don't remember any shelter so I would guess in between then and today

It was boarded up on Monday when i went. I think possibly it has been boarded up because kids keep banging on the glass and stressing the tigers out especially when they were rotating the tigers round). Another reason could be as the female is due to arrive soon, and it may help prevent her stressing out?

Very shortly after the 2 Bengals left the work stated on fitting the new window.

Chester Zoo is shortly to receive the 2,5-year old female cub Kirani born at Paignton. She being related to Kepala (who is already at Chester Zoo), means he will leave the collection and an unrelated male will be sourced for her to make up a new breeding pair. :D
