Smithsonian National Zoo Smithsonian National Zoo News 2012

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo welcomed the births of three different hoofed species in the span of one week. A male scimitar-horned oryx, a female Przewalski’s horse and a female onager were born Aug. 4, 9 and 11, respectively, at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va. The three newborns and their mothers are doing very well, according to keepers. This is the first oryx born at SCBI this year, the first Przewalski’s horse born since July 2010, and the first onager born at SCBI since last September. Each birth is significant for each of the species. The International Union for Conversation of Nature lists the scimitar-horned oryx as extinct in the wild, and the Przewalski’s horse and onager as endangered. All three animals will likely participate in breeding programs.

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo has one gray seal named Selkie (39 years old) in its collection. In fall 2012, her daughters Kjia (22 years old) and Kara (29 years old), and an unrelated male, Gunther, will arrive at the Zoo from the Adventure Aquarium in New Jersey, increasing the Zoo’s gray seal population to four individuals. Gunther is recommended to breed with Kjia and Kara.

Two male harbor seals named Squeegee and Luke will arrive from the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey in late fall 2012.

A new $43 million dollar American Trail is done and set to open? How come we have not heard anything about it until now? (At least I have not - did I miss a post somewhere or did they keep this under wraps?)

They've been quite open that they were building a new sea lion exhibit. When I visited the National Zoo in June 2011 they had this entire section of the zoo blocked off, but all that you could see from the pathway was the old seal exhibit being demolished so the full extent of the new trail was not evident.

Yes, I think up until now (as far as I knew) it was being touted as just a sea lion exhibit. Now, all of a sudden, it is a full blown "trail" with other north american animals.

Nothing has been secretive at all here. Some changes have been made to the exisiting area, which housed and will continue to house American animals and has been blocked off for a considerable time. The sea lion/seal exhibit is the big change as it's a new exhibit. The entire section is getting a new name, but from my understanding, the only significant change is the seal/sea lion exhibit and the pathways.

I'm glad they cleared up that it was a food cafe instead of the other kind of cafe.

I was at the opening of American trails today. Pics will be up in a hour or so. and lots of baby pics of animals too :)

I have received confirmation that lion brothers "Aslan" and "Baruti" have departed for Calgary Zoo. They have cleared their quarantine and are now being introduced to the two females in Calgary (Who they will not be breeding with, just companions as of now).

This is such wonderful news. My fiance woke me up this morning with this announcement. As someone who often pulls pranks on me, I kept not believing he was telling the truth! I hope the cub remains healthy.

So what is a good time frame to estimate when I could see the panda cub on exhibit without there being a crazy mob of people? I know it was insane the first time, and might be even more since people have been waiting. But figuring it's going to be in the winter time, would a week day be the best time?

I wonder why the newborn young are so ridiculously small in this species- they seem even tinier than the newborn young of its nearest Bear relatives.
