The male 'Kavi' has only bred once and had two cubs at Zoo Atlanta. 'Damai' comes from a long line of Tigers, her parents 'Delta' and 'Utan' have bred (I think) ten cubs in four different litters. Quite extraordinary as normally the Studbook holder would split them up.

In quite a short time (litters in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012) as well! I think the 2012 was decided as being the pair's final litter, but don't quote me on that ;)

The zoo has just replied to an email I sent them in November regarding the Bhutan Takin. Dispite we asking if they were still getting Bhutan Takin or if they were switching to Sichuan all they said was, "We would need to find a considerable amount of money from private sources to fund an exhibit at the Zoo. Therefore, for now, our takin will remain at SCBI Front Royal." Even though they never mentioned a specific subspecies I think it's safe to say they've moved on from the idea of Bhutan Takin unless they've secretly been keeping them in Front Royal.

The five seals that came from Adventure Aquarium will make their public debut at American Trails next month. Details will be posted on the zoo's facebook and twitter accounts.

I just got an email from the zoo about Mei Xiang titled "Preparing for Breeding Season". It reads that the zoo has made some upgrades to her den. Mostly they have upgraded the barred barriers in the den to allow for easier access to her and furture cubs.

* The final elephant yard looks close to completion. Although it looks bare and I have no idea why it took them this long to complete it.
* A female red ruffed lemur, Molly, has joined the senior male. A prevost squirrel and rock hyrax also share this exhibit now.
* The harbor seals won't be on exhibit for another month or so. They are taking their time with introductions due to Selkies old age.

I am still trying to figure out what moderations were done to the final elephant yard. I was looking at an old picture and it looks like it's almost the same. The only difference I see is that the barrier is painted brown, they need to paint some patches still, and they got rid of the old wooden fencing. Also, a shading structure was added. I'm wondering if they're waiting to add vegtation. Right now it's looking quite bare.

I know they ran into some issues with funding (ie going over budget) so some of the amenities in the elephant yards had to be scrapped. Most of the budget in this final phase went to creating the spacious community room area which will now allow the zoo to bring in other animals.

Other animals besides elephants or more elephants? I am interested to see what inside the barn will look like when it opens.

Wonderful news! Two clouded leopard cubs were born at SCBI Front Royal early this morning! The cubs are the second litter for mother Sita and father Ta Moon.
