Smithsonian National Zoo Smithsonian National Zoo News 2013

Your right the theory would be blown apart by Tian Tian being the father. Its even a doubtful theory if Gao Gao has been used before too. But there has to be some explanation why the zoo has been so unsuccessful in the past when San Diego and Zoo Atlanta have been so successful on pretty much every attempt. Although they have been much more successful than Memphis which I dont believe has had any pregnacies much less cubs that did or didnt survive.

I dont know why but I have thought since they announced Gao Gao was part of the second AI attempt this year I that he would be the father. Have to wait and see.

According to the zoos facebook page that the panda cubs sex and paternaty will be announced tomorrow morning at 9 am on the facebook page. Dont know why I feel it will be a girl and Gao Gao will be the father.

I second that opinion!

It’s a girl!:) SCBI’s Center for Conservation and Evolutionary genetics confirmed that our panda cub is a girl! Further, the paternity analysis shows that her father is Tian Tian.

The scientists also analyzed the second, stillborn cub. That cub was also a girl, and also Tian Tian’s. The cubs were fraternal twins.

Well I was half right. Do I still get credit for guessing girl? Tian only has the 2 surviving offspring so its probably best. Gao has 5 healthy cubs and they are providing him with grandcubs. Just too bad both females didnt survive because you can always use more females than males.

With the top notch care she and her mother are getting from the zoo I think she will make it. Each day her odds improve. Hopefully she will be able to become a more successful breeder than her mother and father and add lots of cubs to the precious panda population.

Hopefully. But remember, last year's cub passed after 6 days and we've only just passed that mark!

True but the other cub also had under developed lungs or some kind of abnormality with the lungs or digestive tract... cant quite remember... This one appears to be healthy. But its still early your right. Every day she lives does increase her odds of making it as she becomes stronger and more robust. I think we can be cautiously optimistic.

Panda cubbie is a girl, daddy is Tian Tian! The stillborn twin was a girl, too, also sired by Tian Tian.

talking of maps can anyone point me in the direction of a map of the zoo circa 1990?or sooner/later i'm reading SMITHSONIAN'S NEW ZOO about the smithsonian national zoo, but it doesn't have a map in it and whilst the description of the walk around is good, I can't really picture it. The one on the website won't save in it's entirety only in selected squares I think due to it being interactive.
thanks in advance

I would personally love to see if anyone had old maps of this zoo. I visited in 2006 but lost my map. At the time, they were in the middle of constructing Asia Trails. I can't really picture where some of the animals were previous to that, like black rhinos and bactrian camels.

i just saw the coolest thing ever mei xiang went to eat and left the cub in plain sight for 6-8 minutes:cool: it was the cutest thing i have ever seen
