Smithsonian National Zoo Smithsonian National Zoo News 2013

Its nice to see an esteemed zoo exhibit a farm animal in an exhibit likely smaller than the pasture I raise Bison on.

"When you come to visit our tiger cubs, be sure to stop by and say hi to our 3 new bobcats! Their exhibit is between Think Tank and Great Cat Circle."

These bobcats, males Yoda and Cheeze and female Ollie, came to the Zoo from the National Bobcat Rescue and Research Foundation in Texas.

Looks like a litter of 4 and a litter of 6. WOW on the 6. Cheetahs usually dont have that many... 3 is the norm.

I remember a female at Wassenaar which also gave brth to 6 cubs.

In Europe, Boras in Sweden and Marwell (UK) (off the top of my head, there may well have been others) have both had surviving litters of 8 cubs each in recent years...

Whipsnade also had a litter of 7 Northern Cheetahs fairly recently but unfortunately one didn't survive past the first few months, leaving them with 6

I thought I had counted seven in one photo but then the other photo clearly showed four so I assumed Id miss counted.

Those are some pretty big litters. You dont really expect that in big cats. Canines sure but not the big cats. I know it happens but wow seven cubs (8 at the other places you mentioned) seems like a ton. Its like a bumper crop. Two litters for the price of one. Hopefully their mom can keep up with the demands of that many and none will need to be hand reared.

Am I the only one thats starting to find all of these deaths troubling? I know animals die at zoos. Things happen. But 3 animals dying after running into a barrier so hard they break their necks in lesss than a year? That just seems nuts.
