Smithsonian National Zoo Smithsonian National Zoo News 2021

A few updates from a visit today:

- The maned wolves have moved from the Cheetah Conservation Station to the former gray wolf exhibit in American Trail. The move appears to be permanent, as the signage and educational materials are in the same themes as the American Trail exhibit graphics. Their former exhibit didn't appear to house anything at the moment, but I'd suspect one of the groups of hoofstock.

- The outdoor gorilla exhibit is getting a large climbing structure. A crane was installing the structure today and should be completed by next weekend.

- Both sloth bears where exhibited in the large first yard with the waterfall.

Do you or anyone who has visited the zoo recently know of any updates on the elephant import?

I am unaware of anything of the sorts. By import do you mean import from outside the US? Or do you mean transfer from another zoo? If it's the former, that's certainly not the case at all as I'm sure the Smithsonian would not want those bad optics and not sure there is a need. You'll have to ask other members of the thread who have more knowledge of the elephant herd about transfers.

I think they are probably talking about the discussion on page two of the thread, from February.

Yup, I'm talking about Trong Nhi and Nhi Linh from Rotterdam. Last I heard (which was a couple months ago) they were to be imported by this winter and but haven't heard anything about it since. If any other regular visitors are able to provide any updates, I would really appreciate it.

Why on earth would they move the wolves, when they have the same keepers as the cheetahs?? I guess I'm probably never seeing them again, with how thick that exhibit is planted :(

I was there today, one wolf was definitely in the old/current exhibit. I’m thinking they may have separated the two of them. And are housing one on American trail, or they got a third?

Update on big cats:

Most of the National Zoo's Big Cats Are Recovering From Covid

Keepers have continued to conduct Covid tests using fecal samples. Eight of the cats’ most recent samples have returned as “undetermined,” which is a presumptive negative. Only one feline’s test returned positive: 16-year-old lion Luke. The Zoo anticipates that all big cats will be virus-free in one to two weeks.

Recovery is in sight, but not without close calls. Lioness Shera was diagnosed with a kidney disease after contracting coronavirus, which prompted Zoo staff to discuss whether to euthanize her. Although Shera continues to recover, her kidney functions will likely remain a concern.

Full story on Shera (amazing work by the team): https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/10/08/national-zoo-lion-covid-outbreak/
